Can you guys give me your opinion on a 2003 250 hpdi? Thinking about buying a used boat with this motor. Good or bad reputation??

I've owned one for the last 14 years and think it is a great engine.

I would be a bit skeptical. Reason being - that is about the time the hpdi came out, which just replaced the ox66. I would take an ox66 towards the late run of that motor than the earlier models of the hpdi if I had a choice

All motors are succeptible to blowing. Key is to get a great deal and have some extra cash put back in case something happens. I blew my first powerhead this year and first time ever that I’ve ever had a problem with motors in my 30 years of ownership. Owned almost all brands. You just never know. Check compression readings, hours, maintenance schedule of motor. I do feel the worst thing you can do to have a higher probability of blowing is to not use the boat regularly. It is not good for a boat to sit. They are high performance machines and are made to run like a scolded dog!

Thanks all. That's the information I was looking for. And I also agree that you never really know, but I'm trying to keep the odds in my favor as much as possible. :-)

There was a update on those motors I believe. I think it was the oil pump if I remember right. Make sure it has had all the updates .

I have blown a series 1 (at about 400 hours) and a series 2 (at about 850 hours), but I still like the motor and still running the series 2. If the price is right on the boat then I wouldn't be afraid of the potential rebuild, that potential is there with all outboards. The series 2 has actually been running stronger and faster at lower RPM's since the rebuild.

Why don't you check with a dealer that services Yamaha. Give Kroll's marine a call and ask for Charile. They and he are top notch mechanics. Has a ton of used parts as well. He will give you an opinion.

if you are not willing to spend around 400.00 dollars a year to keep all the fuel filters changed don't buy it because sooner or later it will lose a cylinder.

I bought a 20i in 2017 with 250 HPDI that had 653 hrs . I have put almost 150 more on it, must admit an almost paranoia about changing filters, but have done so and have had no
issues. Recently just had to have the HPDI pump rebuilt which cost $1300 and injectors redun and it runs great. Knowing what I know now the pump would be my biggest concern, because
compression checks and spark are not going to reveal that. By the way the motor is an 07.
