Need some opinions on which brand of fluorocarbon line (using from a spool of 200 yds or so) or strictly leader material do you prefer for tying to 50 - 65# braid? I probably will be using 15 - 20 lb as my "leader' rating.

Probably some fluorocarbon lines are preferred for their ability to hold knots? Figure I will use a 5' - 10' length of leader.

Is there any advantage of purchasing leader material vs using fluorocarbon line off of a 200 yd spool? Will be fishing stumpy areas with dying/dead willow bushes.

"befuddled" once again...

Use leader material, it's designed for these kind of knots and use. Sunline makes small spools of leader line just for this purpose around $10 bucks a spool.

I use fluorocarbon leader a lot for different applications when using braid. I have been using the Alberto knot with great success. When flipping in clearer water especially. The Seaguar Flippin fluorocarbon is awesome. The 20lb and 25lb test both are good stuff. I have been using Daiwa J braid 8/ 40 or 50Lb for a while now and the two put together with a 6 double wrap Alberto has not failed me yet. The knot is small enough it goes through the rod eyes well. I normally use a 8’ leader to start. Replace it when I’m down to around 4’ from retying. I also use it on my spinning rods. 30lb braid to Red Label fluorocarbon for 15 to 8 lb test. Hope this helps.

I have been using 17lb seaguar invisx leader tied onto power pro braid, using the John Collins knot. The knot is small and casts through the rod eyes easily and haven't had any breakoffs.

I never heard of a John Collins knot . I googled it. It looks to be an Alberto knot but 5 wraps instead of 7.. ?? I tie mine with 6 so.. anyway. Great knot! I use it all the time no matter who’s name is on it.

I use Sunline leader material also. I use the Lefty Kreh knot. If it's good enough for Tarpon, good enough for me. Plus I can tie it in 20 seconds.

Yes five wraps. Great knot. A friend of mine from California showed it to me. I used it this summer in Minnesota and caught a couple hundred smallmouth, a lot of them were 3-4 lbs, on a wacky senko without ever retying the leader to the braid. It started out 10’ long and by the time the trip was done it was 3’ long. Here’s a link to a video that shows how to tie the one I use.

I used to be an FG knot advocate. I've since switched over to the Alberto. When tied correctly the FG knot is the better knot, but there is no doubt it is a more difficult knot to tie and it can be extremely fickle. It works better with larger diameter line.

It takes 3 hands to tie it!!

I also use the FG knot...it's simply the best knot when tied correctly. It'll work well with heavier lines but works equally well (when tied properly) with thinner lines such as 10-15lb test. One thing I did was to make a set of dowels to pull the knot tight. If the knot/leader/braid changes color while tightening it, you've done a good job. I used to use the crazy alberto but it doesn't hold as well nor is as thin when casting as the FG.
As far as leader material, I use Yozuri pink as it's easy to see above the water.

I went on a smallmouth Trip in May. I was using very light line on spinning gear. 15 lb slick 8 braid for castability and then going down to 8 lb tatsu flouro for a leader. I had tied the FG knot many times on larger diameter line, but no matter what I tried I could not get that knot to hold on that setup. It would look like it cinched, but then when I really pulled it tight it would pull through. It was at that point I lost confidence in the knot. I believe the issue may have been the similarity in line diameter between the two lines. In any case, I've never had the alberto knot fail and I feel like it's 90% as good as the FG, and it's easy to tie, so I've switched.

I've used it on super light line such as fishing for crappie and for heavier line when fishing for tuna. A key I've found is to make sure to use your fingernail or a dull side of a butter knife to 8-10 inches of the braid to knock off the outer coating that is super slick. That being said, the main key is getting it super tight...hence the reasons I made two dowels

really depends on the knot and braid the flouro doesn't matter if you are using a coated braid you better be tieing a dang good knot! I use Power Pro V2 and 15lb flouro red label with a FG knot it was perfect! When I was fishing salt alot I would do 50lb braid to 10lb flouro never a issue with a good FG knot.
