I was in the market for a motor for my Grumman Sport Boat to replace the 15 HP Gamefisher I had on it. The power was great, but I wanted something lighter. It's rated for a 5HP, and I found a great deal on a 2002 Mercury 5hp Four Stroke that I just couldn't pass up. The only issue is, it's a long shaft and I need a short shaft motor. I use it for duck hunting and running up and down rivers and creeks.

I'm sure that there is a way to convert it to a short shaft, but is it financially wise to do so? If not, can anyone suggest a dealer that would make a fair trade? The motor runs great. Just too long. TIA

No cheap way to convert it.
A dealer is not going to make a fair trade as they want to make a profit.
Just keep looking for what you want.

Thanks PowerLizard. I appreciate the advice. Looks like I'll get the title in my name, then sell it for a profit. It doesn't appear to have too many hours on it and it runs like a bat out of hell.

I think I’ve seen height adjustable jack plate type things made for jon boats before. If you can find or make something like that to mount the motor to, you might able to just raise the motor to the proper height so that the prop and lower unit isn’t sticking too so into the water.

Just a suggestion that might be worthwhile to look into since it sounds like you already have the motor. It looks like you can buy something like that around $100-200 and if you get an adjustable one, you have the added bonus of being able to fine tune the height of the motor on the back of your boat as needed to optimize the performance.
