Anybody have any leads on a drying wheel? Mine is (was) one of those battery powered ones, and I finally cranked it up ... and it is dead. So I think I will go with a 110v this time. Anybody? Gotta get on these spoon flies

Purple and chartreuse back to back make an interesting looking spoon. I use UV cure so I don't need a wheel. I've been thinking about rigging up a foam disc on a nut driver for drying some five minute epoxy with the spoon fly.

Last time I tried using up it wasn’t clear cure goo and it got so hot it melted the Mylar. What up are you using? Does drive up cost though!

I went a slightly different route. pool noodle, pvc pipe and a 6 or 8 rpm motor from ebay or a science project supply, an old lamp cord and plywood.
I have built a few over the years. Usually $20 or so. less if you have some stuff laying around the shop.
I used to do a lot of epoxy.

Flycaster I use those cutouts from sightcast. I use UV Knot Sense and then coat twice with Sally Hansen's and they hold up fairly well. Have not tossed them in the salt yet but the bass love 'em. I've done single color and even doubled different colors for a cool look. Pink and chartreuse so far but would like to do silver and gold and light blue and chartreuse I think the latter would do good where there are threadfins.

how are you assembling the spoons ie casting epoxy to form the spoon, applying the decal to an existing spoon, or epoxy decal directly to a hook.

That is similar to what I did awhile back with 5 min epoxy then flex coat came out late 70's
My younger days had me fly tying, rodbuilding and repair in Galveston and Corpus
I would cast the hook into the spoon shape with epoxy add tinsel or foil or pigment then flex coat or epoxy to hold that onto the spoon

Yes fairly durable. beating off rocks etc... eventually breaks them down. I say about three or four outings with the same fly and or over two dozen fish though I have many that are still ticking. I would guess it was something I did wrong ie not getting it completely coated. Definitely last longer than trout flies. I think some of the stimulators I tied for brookies only lasted about a dozen or so fish then the deer hair would begin to break, rubber legs would tear off and the fly was just too slimed for any floatant to keep it on the surface.

Well, when i tried CCG to provide the coating -- when they were still making the Goo -- it got so hot it warped the mylar spoon body. So I guess I will go back to epoxy.

Good info I didn't know about.
Though I haven't had any problem with it on my Morris Boatman pattern. Maybe because it's wrapped pretty snug.
Did you get your drying wheel figured out?
