Tied this up on a #14 Daiichi swimming nymph hook based on hearing about the fondness of sunfish for freshwater shrimp on another thread in the bank fishing forum and some outside research. From my outside research I learned that freshwater shrimp are prevalent in the San Marcos River drainage and my thoughts turned to water bodies in that area nd to the south where many of ya'll fish. Was wondering about opinions on this bug I tied up and its potential for effectiveness in that area and ya'lls experience with the critters in question.

Great fly Bones. You never know how great it could be until you try it. You might try tying some with different types of material other than flash too. Only issue I see is the small sunfish may drive you crazy pulling on those long silly legs

Yep may have to go with something besides flash and have been pondering that just trying to think of something with some kind of a very clear appearance. I'd like something about the size and density of the fine rubber that I have seen in rubber, where it is about a half to 3/4 the size of the nymph sized rubber legs of the antennae on this fly hackle but clear, so far all I have seen is tan and white. Hadn't thought about little fish like long ears pulling on them legs but definitely considering it now.

I have caught them on a variety of crayfish patterns, beautiful fish, and very fun on the fly. That being said, I've had to change flies 6x for a particular Rio to finally eat. Good luck to you.

We have freshwater shrimp here in my East Texas ponds. In my experience they are somewhat smaller than your fly. So, I would trim it some, but I'd bet it will work either way.

Bones72, a clear ribbing would work. or wrap that rubber leg
scratch that, I was thinking of the body.
maybe some 2# mono? ribbing might stretch to a long taper, synthetic hair

I will be interested to see how you do with it on sunfish. I really like the shape and design. If you want to make a larger version and throw it behind a shrimp boat in the Gulf of Mexico, I don't think you will get it back.

Ok so I took ya'lls suggestions. No flash used some clearish fibers from one of my dogs puppy beds that is slowly dying and some midge sized D-rib also went smaller #14 1x long, 1X heavy mustad nymph hook. To ward off antennae grabbers used mono tying thread for the antennae. Eyes are melted 20lb test with a dab of orangish brown fingernail polish

These aren't to represent scuds. Though I will certainly agree that larger sized scuds are dynamite on 'gills and other sunfish. I have boxes loaded to the gills with scuds and sowbugs from my time fishing eastern tailwaters and western lakes and ponds. These are for the little freshwater shrimp that look like their saltwater cousins here in Texas. Apparently many panfish here love 'em and am shooting for a representative pattern

I liked the first one you tied way more than the second! You do make a nice bait. I would think they would work well!

Bones: J-Moe has a fly he uses on Rios/sunfish, and he gets FANTASTIC results! I think he calls it a "Wacky Worm" or a "Bremanotor" I have seen some of his catches and the fish are HUGE!
