First attempt at a crawfish. Realized I left out the pinchers after most of the fly was already done. Added one at the end. Time to see if it actually catches em!

Thanks gents. Made a few more colors and tried at local pond. Fish seemed to prefer baitfish flies in this colder weather. Hopefully they will catch when weather warms up.

Yep those look good. I agree fish like baitfish in the winter. I think most of the crawfish hole up in the cooler months so they are not a prevalent forage species this time of year. I also tend to do better on the more realistic crawfish patterns in creeks. In ponds a weighted fly made of rabbit strip with rubber legs seems to better for me if I'm targeting a crawfish bite. If you want to bridge the gap between crawfish and baitfish a Barr's slumpbuster or meat whistle does the trick.

Looking good. Fun it is to try new ties and experiment. Trying to get into a fish’s brain is part of the fun. There’s a decision making process going on with fish and whatever is presented to them. The worst scenarios are when you get a follow but then the last second rejection.

One hour out on the bay helped change how I fish. The wind suddenly died to nothing, the chop disappeared, the water was clear and I looked into it and realized I was surrounded by redfish. I could see the fish all around my kayak and they would follow my paddle tail on a jig head and veer off just before the eat. What frustration! Covered in good fish and none of them want to play. I had not been fly fishing very long and was still mostly using the baitcasting gear, but happened to have a fly rod with me rigged and ready. First cast with the fly, fish on! What a moment! Turned me from ‘ I’m not sure about this fly fishing” to a true believer. Fly was a version of redfish crack I was doing then and an experiment in of itself.

-John Gierach "Fly Fishing the High Country"

This is good quote to encourage people to try new things, tie different flies, and make some novel moves, maybe they work out and maybe they won’t, but there’s something to learn in the doing.

I agree. I've been making flies like crazy lately and look forward to seeing if I can read their minds. Very fun catching a fish on something you created. I've had a fly rod in the garage for years but never really got into it. Been reading up on line, rods, casting techniques etc and feel like I've finally got a handle on the basics. Plan on using the fly rod as much as possible this next year. I'll post my adventures.
