I watched a video where a couple of guys wanted to test a long distance trip in one from Denver to Portland Or. pulling a small pop up camper. They had it planned out with Tesla's app to find charging stations. They figured is would be like 10 extra hours compared to a gas car. Eventually, they had to call someone to bring them another vehicle as they were going to get stranded along the way, but I think that was in Wyoming.

I believe a tesla has something like 21 moving parts. Two for each motor then the drivetrain. Depending on who you ask and the age of the vehcile conventional cars have a couple hundred to a couple thousand moving parts. I'm told in general tesla's have a fraction of the maintenance costs. The current batteries for the long range models are good for about 500,000 miles.

Yep, that's my point. For someone in an urban area, who is not mechanically inclined or who wants a car that has the dependability of a refrigerator, they are ideal. Been tossing it around to buy one for the wife's next car. The technology will only improve. Every auto manufacturer is going that way. May not be most of our lifetimes but the day is coming. One day, who knows when, if your still driving your current vehicle or one of this era, you'll be like the old guy still driving around in his restored Model T.

Batteries are not the way to go in my humble opinion. What is needed is research on high capacity/high voltage capacitors.

Well, I have a few reasons....

One, that company is a drain on US taxpayers. Obama gave Tesla over $400 million to keep the company afloat. The government gives a tax break for buying the Tesla, which makes no sense at all.

Next, for those that think a Tesla is saving carbon emissions, you have not done your homework. It does not. It will not unless and until the electricity to recharge these inefficient batteries is produced with nuclear power, hydro power or geothermal power. Those are the only nonpolluting energy sources we have today.

How many billions did the major auto-companies receive? If I recall it was about 20 billion all in. Also how many billions are spent annually on oil and gas subsides? Also another 20 billion per year. So it sounds like you are directing your tax payer irritation in the wrong direction!

If you're going to get one, do it before the end of the year. Federal Tax credit gets cut in half from 7500 to 3750. Also, a lot of the other incentives are tied to sales volume.....the more are sold the less government rebates there are available and the amounts are smaller. I think Texas also has a rebate. You can probably get 7-10 grand off of one after all of the Clean incentives.

I'm waiting for the electric trucks to hit the market. I really like the looks and well thought out layout of the Rivian. The highest range they offer is over 400 miles. I've only driven over that distance a handful of times in my life and I'm 57. My BIGGEST problem is I live in an apartment and charging might be an issue. But hopefully by the time they are on the market, apartments will have added charging stations.

I live within 4 miles of work. It takes me maybe 5 minutes of drive time. I think running a gas engine that little over and over isn't good for it. But what do I know..lol

I look forward to the day when they become affordable for the common man.

Probably not in my lifetime.

It is worth looking at for a family second vehicle because they have fewer moving parts. If you own it for 10 years, the maintenance would be a lot lower:
No fuel pump to fail.
No fuel filter to clog.
No fuel injectors to clog.
No ignition coil to fail.
No spark plugs to replace.
No motor oil to replace.
No oil filter to replace.
No oil pump to replace.
No piston rings to wear out.
No pistons, connecting arms, cam shaft bearings.
No valves, valve guides or valve springs.
No air filter to replace.
No exhaust manifold gasket to leak.
No catalytic convertor to be stolen.
No muffler to replace.
No coolant to replace.
No water pump to replace.
No thermostat to replace.
No leaking radiator to replace.
No coolant hoses to replace.
No alternator to replace.

For maintaining an electric car, all I can think of is tires and brakes. Over time the battery won't hold as much charge but there are after market companies who test and replace battery cells for hybrid Prius so doing this for Tesla can't be far off if it doesn't exist already.

Battery technology is nearly changing weekly these days. One guy has one that if the same size as Tesla's could go over double the distance. But the other option would be to make his smaller, like a bread box. Go about the same mileage and swap out after it's used up. He said it would take under a minute to do so. Might not be the way to go but just proves EV's are not going away.

I donโ€™t hate them, but I think they are ugly as hell, even for a car. And cars all basically look the same to me.

Tesla Motors Inc., which received $465 million in U.S. Energy Department loans to develop and build electric cars, will repay the funds five years ahead of schedule in a plan approved by the government.

Tax break for Tesla ends 1 Jan 2020.

Only hybrid I have ever ridden in was a Prius and I could not stand not hearing an engine running. I heard the feds were talking about requiring some sort of noise maker so pedestrians can hear them.

$60,000 for a long range model 3. Low maintenance, low fuel cost (charging).

There are several $60,000 new trucks on the market, some much higher than that, and people are buying them.

Itโ€™s a lot of coin for sure, but $60,000 for a new vehicle isnโ€™t far fetched these days.
