First time on Fayette in about 3 months Sunday afternoon. Tough is an understatement. Graphed 4-5 spots on east and south side. Only saw shad in 1 spot and they were scattered off secondary point. Didn’t see any fish 8-25’. Water temps were high 60’s, water was at least 2’ low. Only had about 2.5 hrs to fish so quit looking and went fishing in some of my go to spots in 8’ up to reeds, timber, no timber, lots of grass but didn’t chase a single bait fish with some moving baits. Zero bites. Had about 20-25 boats at launch around 2:30, but only 1 when I called it quits at 5;00. Still some sunlight left so my guess is it was tough for everyone this afternoon.

I honestly wonder if years and years of pressure have finally taken its toll on Fayette. Today was a perfect fishing day. Pre-front, cloudy with some wind.

I only had slightly better luck last week. Not sure about the fishing pressure, but I do wonder about the major fish kill in October when the lake turned over, all the cast netters in the spring & summer, and the large amounts of Pelicans & cormorants that have to eat on a daily basis to survive.

We will see how the next 2-3 months ago. I suspect fishing will improve quite a bit. But who knows. One thing is for sure, the fish eating birds will be leaving soon if not.

I was out today too. Game warden was checking licenses at about 1:00. He said the fish kill in October was NOT due to turnover but probably something got accidentally dumped by the power plant. I saw shad down by the dam and in one of the coves, but not the huge bait balls I usually see this time of year. They were all right at the surface. Marked lots of fish in 12-26’ but couldn’t buy a strike. Tried crankbaits, jigs, swimbaits, and rattle baits. Not even a sniff. My usual spots were a dud and I didn’t see anybody hooking up. Warden said catfish are going strong but that’s about it. I don’t think birds are to blame. But the spill and all the castnetters might be taking a toll. Fished from 10:30-2:30 and then called it quits.

I bet over 200 people that fished it this weekend read this like every other Fayette post but did not offer any tips, but more than they offer on Conroe I guess.

barbarian - don't let it get to you. I will be going back to Fayette in the near future but we went to Bastrop Saturday. Beautiful day. Warm, blue skies, very little wind but very mediocre fishing. Fished from about 9:30am until about 2:30pm. Caught 11 fish total. 9 dinks and 2 decent (for Bastrop) fish. It was a none to some to none kinda day. I have no idea if it was one of high barometric pressure days or not. We'll get em next time!

My last couple trips I've been getting 8-10 fish in 5 hours of fishing. Which is downright terrible for Fayette. The good news is most have been 4's and 5's. Just about everywhere I try on that lake just seems dead. I've got a couple offshore spots that have always always produced fish for years that have gone completely dry in the last 1.5 months. I don't know anything about this chemical spill, but it's as good a theory as I have heard.

LOL. It didn't. Not real sure what or who it was about. My guess is everybody else who fished it this weekend and did good, then read my post but didn't comment with tips.

I don’t feel so bad now... I went Sunday with my wife to knock the dust off my boat. Boat hadnt been on the water in 10 months. Got there around 2 and was gone by 4:30. Ned rig and a jigging spoon was all that produced for me. And that wasnt much. I didnt let it get to me. Fayette has always been Hero or Zero for me. I have had 100 fish days and been skunked more times than I can count. Sorry to hear about the fish kill... I have been out of the loop. Maybe I will go to Somerville next time..

I agree the cast netting is a problem on Fayette. When I started fishing Fayette back in 2005, I would see cast netters throwing their nets while in their boat. Now it seems that they get out of their boats and wade the shoreline tearing up spawning beds and what little structure the shoreline has to offer. Its bad enough that I have had them literally go around me while I was going down the bank and jump out of their boats, but they don't care or think about what they are doing to the resources. I am in the process of seeing what if anything the TPWD would be willing to do to curtail this practice at least during spawning season. I will be reaching out them this month to see what they say. I will post their response if they respond at all.

I started fishing in 2007 and the castnetters are a lot worse now. Especially around Park Prairie where they wade up to their necks, around boats, systematically trashing the lake bottom. Can’t be good for spawning. I would love to see that activity regulated or curtailed out there. A couple of times I’ve seen bass and catfish get thrown in coolers and I’m pretty sure they weren’t legal sized.

I don't know WHY lakes like Fayette and Fairfield don't just disallow cast nets. Everyone except the people with the nets know that they do more damage than good.
