I’m getting ready to buy another truck. Reviews seem good on the 2.7. The extra mpgs when not towing would be nice I drive a little bit for work.
Can’t decide? Any thoughts

OP there's dozens of pages of discussion on Ford's engine options. I have the 3.5 Ecoboost. I've driven the 2.7 and pulled my 7k lb camper with both. The 2.7 isn't bad but I would go with the 3.5 over the 2.7. I average 20 mpg driving roughly 65% highway 35% city and 24 highway in the 3.5. If I was planning on driving it 200k plus then I'd get the 5.0.
You get out of it what you put into it!

I have a 2014 F150 SCREW , 5.0L , with 119k and still purrs like a kitten . Gas average in town is 15.9 , out on hwy it averages 17-18 mpg . Reason i bought it cause I don’t trust the newer model 6 cyl . Plus alot of research from mechanics saying the 5.0 was the best , easiest engine to work on if needed with plenty pull power . Mine is 2wd but the 4x4 is alot popular . But if your doing light towing and just running around town the 6 maybe right up your alley . But if pulling a travel trailer or large boat consider the 5.0 at minimum .

I have 2017 with the 2.7l. It's a stout engine. Been a great truck. Pulls my Tahoe boat easily.

I have not driven the 5.0 or 3.5, but I don’t have any complaints with my 2.7. If you only pull occasionally, it’s a perfect combination.

I have a 2018 F-150 with 5.0 with a 10 speed. I love it. Almost 400 HP. Will pull anything. 23 MPG on the road 19 in town. I went with the 5.0 because I plan on driving it at least 200K.

When I bought my 2015 I went with the 5.0 because one of the techs told me if I was going to keep it for a long time that’s the one to have but if I was trading in a couple years the 3.5 was the one to get. I ended up trading it in March for another one with the 5.0 and 10 speed trans. I drive 75 miles round trip for work on the Bush and some around town and average 19-20 mpg and 23-24 all highway not towing.

You guys are getting great mileage with the 5.0, are y’all’s both 4wd’s? 4WD for me too. The key is the 10 speed transmission which came out in 2017 for the F-150's. Keeping it below 75 helps too. My 2017 also has the auto stop/start. It's a pain in the arse but it does help a little on the fuel milage.

For hwy driving the 10 speed should make almost no difference depending on final drive ratio.

My 2018 4wd 2.7 will get 23mpg in the right conditions at 70mph, but I am averaging 18.5-19mpg overall (City & Hwy). If I could get the same mpg with the 5.0, I would have went that route, but I wasn’t reading numbers that high.

My kid was averaging over 19 mpg on the 2.7l before the bigger tires. Not sure what it's on now.

I have a 2015 Super Crew with the 5.0l and average mid 17s with 90% city driving. I have out 130k on truck with no issues. Very pleased and not looking to swap trucks if that is an indication. Bought the V8 vs Ecoboost because I don't trust the turbos.

Same situation here. Had the 5.0 in a 2014 and now a 5.0 in a 2018 FX4 and it's pretty good on gas even pulling my Skeeter. The 10 speed is awesome too. My SIL is a Ford tech and he swears by the 5.0 and drives one himself.

Had the 5.0 in a 2017 XLT and just upgraded yesterday to a 2019 XLT with the 3.5. The towing capacity on the new truck is rated at 13k lbs. I will say when I pulled my 21ft bay boat yesterday as a test, I was impressed...MUCH more power. Looking forward to setting up the trailering function so my wife can back it down the ramp!

I've said for a long time that anybody who thinks the 5.0l tows as good as the 3.5l, they never towed with one. That low end torque is only second to a large diesel.

I'd get the 5.0L 8 days a week, personally.

No first hand experience with the turbo engines; my 2013 5.0 has about 140k on it with no engine problems to date. Had a minor rear differential leak repaired about 4 years ago, new battery about 3 years ago, and a dead radio replaced 1 year ago.

Yup Im with yal, its contrary to generally accepted belief, but that 3.5 twin turbo v-6 makes serious torque in a small package. I have been a fan of the 3.5 for a long time.

2001 Ford Expedition, V8 5.4 392k miles. Pull every week. Those tritons motors are hard to kill. If you want engine life and easy DIY repairs go 5.0, if you want a little better towing power and better MPG go the V6 4.2.
