Great report! I've never had much success dead-sticking. Could you help by answering some questions? Can you show a picture of your bait set-up and describe its size(s) and weight? What type and size line did you use? Were you spot-locked or drifting? When over fish, how long between bites? Any other suggestions? Thanks, Dennis

Thanks Dennis-- The winds on Thursday were 7-12 from the NE and Friday 8-15 mph from the SE and we were using 2 - 60 inch drift socks (one attached to the front and one attached to the back of the boat) drifting and covering lots of ground at a drift of .3 to .5 mph. This is critical. I am a believer that deadsticking vertically is the key. If the drift is faster than .5 mph you will be fighting to get that bait to be vertical OR you will need to be using a heavier jig head. I like using 3/4 oz round jig heads and have had more success with a bit lighter jig head. We were using an orange/black combo head as well as a Chartreuse head with a 4 inch Berkley alive minnow (i have attached a picture) and were fishing them at 18-23 ft even though we were fishing in 38-43 ft. The fish were hanging up in the thermocline. We are using 10 lb berkley crystal fireline and using 7ft St Croix medium fast action spinning rods.

Thanks very much for the info. Never heard of Berkley alive minnow. I'm going to rig-up and give it a try. You didn't answer about how fast they bite. If I'm on fish, how long on average should I expect to wait before a bite once I get the bait down to where the fish are? Thirty seconds? One minute? 5 minutes? 10 minutes?

It varies but I would say if you are finding them they will bite every 5-10 minutes. Be ready when they hit and you will need to set the hook!!
