In your opinion what works best on sunfish and why do you say so?

It would have to be 4lb for me. The main reason is when i fish for gills I fish the BOC weightless or I'm throwing a 1/80 tiny jig and the 4lb helps with casting distance.

4 lb and sometimes as light as 2 lb for me. Leads to a lot of breakoffs but I toss lightweight stuff and lighter line works better.

Laker...For me it all depends on the location and the rod. When using my lightest rods (G Loomis & St Croix) I have them loaded with 4 lb. test. All of my Ugly Styks are loaded with 6 lb. test. I fish the lighter rods with the 4 lb. test mostly in open water on beds & near reed beds. (Summertime) The Ugly Styks & 6 lb. test is mostly used in the trees & rocks (rip rap). If the big cats & bass are likely I only use the Ugly styks & 6 lb. test....

I won't go below 6lb.

For me it is six pound test line. It is easy to work with and for my style of fishing it works the best!

I have tended to use 6lb and in some instances 8lb since moving back to Texas. If I feel the need to go lighter I will add a lighter "leader" of tippet material; this is the case with either fly or conventional gear. The only time I have gone real light is fishing crappie in the winter down hear. 2lb ice fishing line cant be beat. I have seen threads on whether or not crappie are line shy; probably just a confidence thing or perhaps it lets the baits move better, don't know but my catch rates used to really go up.

If I was using mono it would be 4 lb. over 6 lb. I only fish with a fly rod and use 6 lb. fluorocarbon. I've read a lot about how line shy bluegill can be but I haven't really proved that point though.

On the other hand I have proven multiple times how line shy white bass can be. So if I can get white bass to take a fly on 6 lb. fluorocarbon in crystal clear water then I don't worry about sunfish doing the same.

The other major reason I use lighter, thinner lines is the natural action of the fly increases dramatically.

Yeah, both 4lb and 6lb test have their places and most sunfish chasers will have both options in their bag or a way to compensate if they have to. I've been using 8lb Gliss (with a diameter of 2lb mono) with a 6lb flouro leader for 6+ months now and it does just about everything I want it to do. I do have some 4lb leader material if I need it, but the combo above has been working great for me. in the clear waters of CenTex and other clear water bodies, cast ability becomes one of, if not the, most important factor when chasing most panfish. getting right on top of big bluegill or big redbreasts when fishing artificials will typically not produce as good of results when compared to fish that don't even know you're there because you've casted from 40+ yards. Now you still have to have the right gear and the right presentation, but a long, somewhat accurate cast is half the battle in my experience.

I do like a hybrid line a bit better if I have to fish deep. It tends to fall faster.

Do not target sunfish. I use 10 to 12 pound test line on the fish I target. For the bigger ones I use 20 plus!
