Just saw Mudshark's post about the first time he's going to the doctor in 20 years. Well let me tell you a story. One of my best friends from High School just called me up a few weeks ago. He's got stage 4 Prostrate Cancer. Like Danny he was putting off going to the doctor. He had been when he was 50 and knew his PSA (Prostrate Specific Antigen) count was low (below 5) and missed a few years and it had gone up to 9, then missed a few year doctor's check up and bam. He's eaten up with cancer all throughout his body. It started in his prostrate and spread up his spine. The one thing he stressed to me, is if you catch it early it's almost 95% curable. If you don't catch it early it's not good. Every woman goes to get a Papsmere or a Mammogram once a year. Every man should go get his blood work and know his PSA count every year after he turns 40 - there is no excuse. You guys have all been warned. I'm going in 2 weeks as I promised him I would. I will get on hear every year around Thanksgiving and check to see if you have done your job. Prayers up for my Buddy but it doesn't look good! Get your annual checkup done and tell them you want your bloodwork tested because you want to know your PSA level. I know of 3 men who had Prostrate Cancer and it was caught early and they were all cured. Cancer in the spine is bad mojo. Prayers up for your friend Prostate CA is very slow and insidious usually but 99% of men will develop it.
Advice? Wise men don't need it. Fools won't heed it.

Yes it is. He had 5 broken vertebrate because of it. They fixed that first, now he's on Chemo and radiation - And the stories he told me about the pain is just sickening - he's now getting around with a walker. Back in his time, he was one of the baddest human beings I've ever been around. His nick name was Bear Killer.

I have two check ups a year. One required by the VA and the other required by my insurance. So far no issues and very sound advice David. My Dad fit your buddies profile and he died on his 65th birthday because of aggressive Prostrate Cancer.

March 2019 - 2.3 July 2011 - 5.6. 3 weeks later, 6.2. Sent for biopsy, which came back positive, but caught very, very early. I had no symptoms other than a slightly elevated PSA. After 45 radiation sessions, declared cancer free, January 12, 2012.

I have mine checked every year and so far so good. I have 2 friends near my age that caught it early and are both cured. For a needle stick in your arm once a year it is a good safety measure.

.07. Had mine checked for the first time after two of my friends developed prostate cancer. One friend had the surgery and did ok. The other friend is really having a hard time. More serious level and they removed more stuff.
It's definately something that needs to be caught early, or your toast!

There is a score called the Gleason Scale that measures how aggressive cancer will spread. I was fortunate that my score was low.
A high Gleason Score is big trouble.
