My favorite place to fish, Lake Bastrop, used to have a very active power plant. Now, it seems to hardly ever be used. The last time I went to Bastrop a few weeks ago, the water was about 65 degrees. I fished Hall's Bayou this last weekend. It was 64 degrees. It has got to really screw up the fish living in power plant lakes where the water temperature can be so inconsistent.

Be safe,

Hard to fish patterns on a power plant lake for sure. Bastrop has some nice bass! thumb

Bastrop is a fun lake for bites but quality is lacking, I prefer Fayette.

Years back, I said the same thing. Today I lean more towards numbers. Now don't get me wrong; I love the thrill of a BIG fish but those are few and far between.

I fished Bastrop a couple of times years ago. The little bass were fun, but like Minner Bucket, I prefer Fayette County. Last couple of trips have been tough for me there though, but i know some folks have been doing pretty good. I just need to find the fish. They’re not where I left them in October apparently. By the way, water temp was 65 last time I was there a few days ago.

My favorite power plant lake, Monticello, was completely shut down two years ago.
So inconsistent generation can be bad but it’s not as bad as the alternative.
I think more will be completely shut down in the next 5-10 years.

Slide right, coming in .... Fish On!

The fish are still there doing the same things they have always done, they just adjusted to the cooler temps. The fisherman has to do the same thing.

Seems like I have been on Fayette a few times this year and they were not generating or releasing water in the discharge.

Replying to the first part of this thread RE Bastrop/Fayette, both lakes have seen much better days. I've fished them both extensively and basically grew up on Bastrop. Part of the issue with 'Strop is that warden presence is non-existent any more where they use to be out checking every weekend. People take illegal fish from it regularly. That and the pressure Bastrop was getting have made it a tough lake. I still fish it, but 3# is a "good fish anymore and 4-5# is very rare. I can count on one hand the number of anything over 5# in the last 10 years.
Fayette lost all its grass for some "unknown" reason about 10 years ago and that hurt that lake quite a bit. Its still a good lake, but where the norm was 4-5# and 7-9# was a regularity I have trouble finding any big fish there these days. Most of my favorite spots are everyone's favorite spots anymore because favorite spots are just not a plentiful without the grass.
Even with the timber its a 6-7 of 10 for me anymore especially given I have Decker in my backyard...for now until the city shuts it down.
just my $.02

I didn't lose him at the boat. I shook him off cause I didn't want my hands to get "fishy"

The biggest problem with Fayette is its so small it’s hard to act like you don’t have a fish on when the boat show is running wide [censored] open by you while you’re out in the middle of the lake crushing them! sarcastic

That plant does not totally shut down. It might shut down for maintenance but that would be rare. I fish that lake at least once a week most of the year. The twin stack unit is the latest technology and meets air emission standards. I have been there multiple times when that stack is the only one putting up steam. It costs so much to build a power plant, the LCRA is going to run their profitable plants until they either fall apart or our regulated out of business. Yes coal is on the decline in the power plant industry but it still produces 50% of our nations electric supply. Its going to take a long time to eliminate it if we still like to turn our lights on and heat/cool our homes. So Fayette which is not a "peaking plant" like Bastrop will be around for a long time in my opinion.

The problem with these power plant lakes is that they trick fishermen into thinking they can fish. I say that because those people go to the same spots every time to try and catch the same fish. But the minute something changes and the fish aren't there, BAM, the lake is ruined, turned over, blah blah blah. The fish move so the fishermen need to learn to move as well, but these guys that only fish these lakes don't want to actually put in the work to go find them. I get sucked into this trickery as well, but you need to have the awareness to change it up and think outside that warm water box they have built.
