Will be trying the bays around San Louis pass this weekend. I am seeing water temps in the high 50s. Kayak fishing for reds, trout, and flounder. Forecast for Saturday is sunny.

Will I be wasting my time? I know below a certain temp the fish get lethargic. Other posts on the forum say November can be a great month, but make no mention of specific water temps. And winter seems to have arrived early this year.

My experience is mostly in Louisiana with bull reds. Below 60 deg F, action can be very slow. Finding deeper water that is still warm is the key to success when shallow water is cold. Gulf water is still warm. I'd fish deeper water in or near the pass.

I’d say Saturday ought to be great, at least in terms of water temperature.

https://tidesandcurrents.noaa.gov/stationhome.html?id=8771972

San Luis Pass surface water temperature is about 60 now and will likely be two or three notches above that by Saturday, with the bright and sunny conditions expected Friday and warmer gulf water coming in with the tide. Shallow water like what’s in West Galveston Bay will warm up quickly under full sun, even lower angle November sun.

Just a few miles offshore, water temperatures at 6 feet deep are in the mid 60s.

Fish have to eat.

TheBig Female FlatFish should be migrating out to the Gulf...Finger mullet if you can find any, or Mud minnows for bait. Wading is dangerous there.

We did catch fish. Cast net for bait was useless, did not see anything in the shallows, did not see bait fish moving till after lunch on both days. Water clarity was excellent.
Caught two undersize and one slot redfish on Saturday on soft plastics in three feet of water. All fish caught after noon.
Caught one undersize and one slot trout and a two flounder on soft plastics in a 5 foot channel on Sunday before noon, also on soft plastics. All fish caught on or near bottom, no surface feeding seen.

Thanks for the update. I went out Saturday at 10:30 and fished until about 2:45. Caught a lot of undersized redfish, plus four small slot reds and one undersized trout. Signs of bait were evident, finger sized mullet around, and other predator sign. Everything on artificials in 18-24” of water over mud and shell. Water visibility about 18-24”. Nearby Freeport USCG gauge was reading water temperatures in the high 50s. Water felt colder than that at the launch. Looks like the SLP gauge was reading mid 50s warming to near 60. No sign of flounder for me but a nearby kayaker got his two keepers plus two reds on unknown bait.

There's no real set temperature that is too cold, You do have to adjust where you're fishing based on the conditions tho.

Fish are cold blooded, they don't know what hot or cold is.

i have gone to Texas City Dike the last 3 cold fronts in 50degF or colder and broke my PB twice this year in the worst weather. You have to buy bait though because cast net is unlikely this time of year. The fishing is slow but when you get bit you are going to be tugging on it for sure. I have my last videos on my channel
