Chuck, you youngsters missed the hey day of the trout program. At its height the trout were stocked in many area ponds in the thousands instead of the hundreds. And the Tarrant Regional Water District had its own stocking program independent of the TPWD. The TRWD had two stockings a year and trout over 5 pounds were not uncommon. The TPWD stockings were smaller fish but greater numbers. The high point in the Trinity River stocking was the tail race of Possum Kingdom Lake, where fishermen by the hundreds vied for a huge stocking.

My late friend Terry Turner and I traveled to ponds and the Trinity River throughout the Metroplex. We usually limited out. Our goal was to catch 100 trout per season.

Wow. What year did that take place? Catching five pound trout would be totally AWESOME!

The practice of stocking a few very large trout in with the smaller ones continued until 2000 or so. Then TRWD management decided they go more PR bang for their buck by stocking larger numbers of smaller trout.

Every now and then TPW will put in a a couple of BIG ONES. I caught one 18 inches two years ago and last year I saw someone catch a 20" fish. thumb
