This pup is a lab shepherd mix that presents as almost all lab. She has a very strong personality and seems like she has a lot of drive. But honestly I don’t know what I have yet. And now that I’m older I want to enjoy getting out in the fields and marshes with a working dog, something I didn’t take advantage of with my boy Boo.

We will be back out tonight at Tower Bay. She’s pretty fond of her toy Dracula that I might tie to a string and throw out a bit deeper. See if she has a little more emotional attachment to Dracula than a ho-hum stick.

Put some waders on and walk out in the water past where she normally would go and try to get her out to you. Gradually back up once she understands it’s ok.

Or take TX up on his offer. I think her seeing another dog swimming and having fun will help the most.

I trained my GSP to be force broke to retrieve. Doesn’t matter if she likes it or not she will retrieve. I used the green book. Care and training of the versatile hunting dog.

So Jim, have you decided to keep the pup? I always like to see dogs land in good homes. Good luck and hope all is well.

Wolters hated Chesapeakes he wasn't smart enough to train them.

Having another dog that is enthusiastic about the water can help get a pup to figure it out. I'm in Princeton and could meet at Lavon sometime to throw bumpers.

some are naturals. I had a Golden when I got out of college that was really just a pet. When she was about 3 I noticed how birdie she was. Never trained other than in real hunting situations. Took her dove hunting first then duck and geese. Dog was an incredible duck and goose dog. She would see or hear birds that you could not see. I would just sit in the blind and watch her. She never got distracted. I saw her retrieve and goose that fell hundreds of yards out in a field and halfway between us and a huge flock. I was afraid she would go after the flock. She would dive under water after ducks. Never lost a dove with her.

I think she is a keeper. That will make one rescue and one foster to adoption in the house.

She’s a beautiful dog with a lot of drive and personality. Our rescue is the most chill, relaxed, easy to take care of dog so this one is a big departure and we weren’t sure we were ready for that long term. I’m 53 so if she lives 12 years, I’ll be in my golden years so she will probably be the last one.

One of my regrets with my black male Boo who was with me 15 yrs was never working him. I’m not a dog expert but I always thought he had incredible stamina and natural instincts. I love watching them in their element.

So in February she’s off to a trainer for 4 months then we will see what she’s all about. She’s not all lab but a mix with shepherd.

That is a nice looking dog. Does the other dog not like playing in the water?

The other dog can’t swim to save its own life. In fact, she kind of loses her mind a bit in the water - weirdest thing ever she won’t find an edge of the pool to get out and will stay in there or want to jump back in till her heart explodes. We went for a walk down near lake Lewisville one time were she followed my sons lab into the water and I physically had to wade out into about 4’ of water to drag her [censored] back onto shore. She’s a terra firma dog only.
