Every so often I like to make a slide show of recent screenshots and thought I would put together one from my recent Fall fishing trips from October and early November.....I'm a nerd a know : )

Heres several screenshots of hybrids suspended as well as several where they were bottom hugging. Also got into a serious school of gar the last few trips and shared a few of those screenshots.

Anyways, check it out if interested and looking for a refresher on what you should be looking for while hybrid fishing. Deadsticking is already starting to be a good approach as well as using live shad.

Not sure. FPH is only 4,000 acres according to TPWD so fairly small lake compared to most lakes so I imagine is cools off and heats up faster than a lot of other lakes. It’s also very dirty water which I’ve heard that makes things happen quicker as well

From lots of experience and trial and error.

In the summer I came across the same returns in a cove and thought, man those look so different from what I have learned the hybrids look like but let’s give it a go as I have done a few times in the past. So as I stopped and fished I noticed 2-4 foot long nose gar hit the surface all around me as has happen on previous attempts when I saw the same returns. It then clicked in my mind that those returns are gar and hence why I never catch hybrids when I see those returns.

If you notice on SI, their return is very hot, glowing/has a blur around the signal much different then the hybrids. From my experience that is characteristic of gar and knowing that it saves me a lot of wasted time. I believe their extremely tough scales just makes a super hot signal unlike any other fish.

I have see very similar solar returns on schools of long nose gar on Belton. I would find them schooling in the same area day after day. I lost a lot of bait trying to catch them at first, thinking they were hybrids. I added a little frayed rope to the hook and verified that it was gar. Now I avoid the area when I see returns like these.
