Monster! Good work! Great Picture! Congratulations on the state record. Also, congrats on achieving (or about to) your goal of catching a carp every month for 5 years. That's real dedication.

Love the fly. I was trying to come up with a weighted fly that would enter the water with less plop and be more prone to scoot over stuff on the bottom. I tied essentially the same fly as your's. Showed it to a buddy who said, "oh yea, that's a ................" (I forgot what he called it). Anyway, great fly. Osbornfishing, I second your recommendation of the fly and it comes as no surprise to me that you caught that monster on it and think so highly of it. Here's my version

Be sure to post a pic of the carp you catch in December that completes your goal!

I have seen different versions of this fly all over the country. I have seen it in pink to simulate eggs and in blue to simulate berries. It seems to be just right for a carp to suck in as a potential food item. It was so far down in the buffalo's throat that I could barely see it.

So here is my carp on a fly rod for November. I caught it after work and just before the Cowboy Game started lol. It gave me a crazy fight. I think the fish thought he was a linebacker.

Since I am chasing records, I vary my tippet and brand often. For the black buffalo I was using 16# tippet and for the carp 20# tippet. I use about 6 feet of straight leader from the fly line most of the time. Common brands are Rio, Berkley, Maxima, and Scientific Angler.

Crazy big vacuum mouth and crazy simple but effective fly! I’ll wrap some of those little booger’s up. Thanks for posting and sharing your knowledge. I’ve yet to stick a carp on the fly. Mostly for lack of trying. But that changes now. Happy thanksgiving to you and all!

Do you mind my asking how you fish that fly? Were you sight fishing? Did you chum? Or was it just blind casting? I am a complete novice to carp and buffalo buggy whippin’.

I fish 2 versions of the fly. One is sinking and the other is floating. I use the floating fly if I see fish active on top. The sinking fly is for any other situation. Throw out the fly then very slowly strip it back. The key is to keep pressure on the line so you can feel the hit. The BIG secret is to set the hook as soon as you feel anything. Carp sample food with their mouths so they will touch the fly to see if it is food. Once they figure out it is a fly they spit it out and will not touch it again. Many years ago, it took me two full weeks to figure out how to catch one on a fly. Oh, and the first job is to fish in a place were carp are around. If you see they rolling or swimming by that is a good place to start. Chumming the area will help if you have a great state like Texas where it is legal. Areas where people feed ducks are a good place to look (but don't let anybody else know).

I'm not a carp fisherman, but I bowfish the [censored] out of them. That said, I work in Wyoming a lot and took up fly fishing while up there. Reading this thread actually has me considering chasing some carp with a fly rod to keep sharp for the chances I get to chase trout on the North Platte. Great thread!

It's only a good cast if you catch a fish...

Carp on one of the best fish I have ever caught on a fly. It takes a while to figure them out, but once you do hang on. They will tear up your gear lol. From your posts I know you know where they live lol.

Thank you very much for the insight. Very helpful!

Great information and congratulations on the record fish.

I’ve only caught grass carp. Years ago, commercial gill netters would put a few nets in the lake I live on and catch big buffalo. I heard the fish were taken to St Louis and made into Gefilte fish. I don’t know if any of the Buffalo are left. The vegetation in the lake is all but gone, thanks to the tilapia and grass carp. Cold water a couple of years ago mostly wiped out the tilapia and the grass carp are mostly gone. Maybe the Buffalo will make a comeback.
