Well, it took me over 10 years, but I finally got a big black buffalo to pick up a fly. At 35.5 inches and 27.0 pounds, the fish is double the weight of the current state record on a fly rod. If you fish long enough, it will finally pay off (lol). The fish was released after the record documentation was collected.

Awesome, awesome fish! Congrats on the state record! I've yet to nab myself a Black Buffalo, but one is certainly on my list!

May I ask what lake? One problem with records and certified scales is that they are accurate. Without a certified weight, I am sure I could have said this one weighed 50 pounds or more lol. I caught the fish on Lake Whitney.

Awesome, awesome fish! Congrats on the state record! I've yet to nab myself a Black Buffalo, but one is certainly on my list! Thanks TXMulti-species. One of these days we need to get together and catch one. Lake Granbury is a great spot for black buffalo if you are ever down that way.

What fly did you catch it on? The only member of the carp/buffalo/sucker group I have ever caught is a black buffalo, which I caught in the Red River below Lake Texoma. It came up and smoked a chartreuse/white Lefty's Deceiver right under the surface while I was fishing for stripers. My fish weighed a bit over 6 pounds. I thought it was odd that it hit a streamer, but a few months later my brother caught another one in the Red River while throwing a white chatterbait, so the Red River black buffaloes are apparently shad eaters.
Hopefully I can catch a carp, smallmouth buffalo or both tomorrow at the Lake Lavon event. I am far from a fly fishing purist so catching them on conventional tackle will be just as exciting.

I use what I call a carp slayer fly. It is spun elk or pronghorn hair on a #2 or #4 ultrapoint mustad hook. I use a floating and a sinking version in brown, white or tan. The sinking fly has a base of brass wire around the hook. This is the best fly I have found for carp and buffalo. As a personal goal I have caught a carp on a fly rod every month for the last 4 3/4 years. If I catch one in November and one in December it will be 5 year in a row and I will have achieved my goal lol. I hope you did well at Lavon. I went back to Whitney and did not catch any more buffalo.

That is an awesome catch. congrats on the record. Also quite a fine job catching a carp on a fly rod ever month for almost 5 years.
