Just curious what your rod length and actions are based on types of fishing. Just wondering because I am going to be purchasing some new rods for next year and through reading I am finding various reasons for various techniques. I know certain rods and actions will "get the job done", but want to be more technique specific and up my hookup ratio percentage. Just as an example, I was watching Jacob Wheeler discuss his new Duckett rods and for C-rig he actually prefers the 7'6" Heavy, but Moderate Fast tip because he says you want the back bone, but a parabolic bend on the end. That was eye opening because I normally use Heavy or Extra Heavy and Fast for most soft plastic fishing and jigs.
C-rig - 7'6" MH/F, or H/F ect... or do you go big at 7'10"???
Texas rig ???
Jigs ???
Small cranking - 1.5 square bill, rattle traps, chatterbaits, spinner baits, ect....

I never use my 7' heavy action rod after being able to catch fish on medium action 6.5' with back bone. Casting 1/2 oz lures is easier and setting the hook so that it doesn't get pulled out is for me the main reasons. Same for crankbaits, spinnerbaits, jigs and any other lures that swim horizontal to the bottom and any lures worked on the bottom.
For light lures a 5.6 - 6' light action is my preference. Braid allows good hook sets from a distance as well a strike detection so going to a heavier action rod doesn't seem necessary. Flipping in heavy weeds with heavy lures might justify it, but not most everything else I cast.

Take a look at various rod manufactures and you can get an idea on length and action for technique specific. Some brands have some very good multiple purpose models. If you search the forums you can get an idea. For example. Falcon Cara Amistad turned out to be a really good multi-purpose rod. However, they seem to be on permanent back order. Once you get familiar with a specific brand and line of rods it's a little easier to get a feel for the other technique specific models. A medium heavy fast action may not feel the same if you switch between rod lineup and/or brands. Something to be aware of when looking. Example, the same rod in Falcon Cara is not quite the same as in BuCoo lineup. https://falconrods.com/falcon-expert.htmlhttp://dobynsrods.com/rods/champion/

Small cranking - 1.5 square bill, rattle traps, chatterbaits, spinner baits, ect.... Do a little research and see if Jacob Wheeler uses braid for his main line on C-rigs. If so this is most likely why he wants a parabolic bend in his rod. My guess is he does. Most of the Elite guys do. Here is an excellent article by Greg Hackney on why he uses braid and a softer parabolic rod for flipping. I am far from a BASS Elite angler but I always back down one rod power when using braid whether its for C-rigging, T-rigging, or pitching a jig. https://bassblaster.rocks/greg-hackneys-braid-flipping-system

I’ve never tried braid on anything but flipping or a frog. I’ve seen a few guys use light braid for franking but that’s it. I’m no pro either but figured braid for c-rig or Texas rig would be too much. I’ll try and research it though as suggested.

Carolina rig....I use a Dobyns 784. I have used several different rod brands and lengths but none shorter than 7ft 6in. for the C rig and I like the 784 the best. Tx. rig....for 3/8-1/2 oz I use a Power Tackle rod 144 which is a 7ft rod. I also throw jigs on them in the same weights. For heaver jigs 3/4 flipping and football head jigs I use the Power Tackle PG 104. For a light Tx. rig I use a Dobyns and a Powell 703 or a 683.
Small cranking I use a 7ft Powell crank bait rod with a Daiwa Tatula CT reel. I have two set up for small baits and topwater baits. 6-1 gear ratio on one and a 7-1 gear ratio on the other. Spinnerbaits and Chatter baits I use an FXtreme rod with a Lews Super Duty reel 6-1 gear ratio. I think it is 6-9 in length.

I have a heavy and a medium heavy for frogs. That dang medium heavy rod I can cast a frog a long way.... depends on the conditions which one I use though. For my CR rigs I also do the same thing. I usually have a lighter line CR rig tied to a M/H action and a heavier line on a heavy with fast action.
