Has the striper bite on main lake picked up since the temperatures have cooled in the last week?
Got a boat and I am hoping to catch some stripers on top water lures as the sun is coming up and will then use slabs or maybe even live shad going deep / vertical after 8 AM. Thanks in advance for any input. Ken

Have fished PK over ten times in the past two weeks. Very few stripes over 20 inches .The sand bass are prevalent and unfortunately, so are the rat stripes. We have a set rule with regard to undersized fish, catch two and move. Barbs are smashed and one hook has been removed. I don't care what anyone claims, three hooks with barbs will destroy the mouths of said fish !! Can't eat won't live and therefore the numbers in that species shrinks.

We do the same, besides, it is a pain to remove a full treble anyway.

I have never seen so many rat stripers on PK before. There are literally everywhere! A product of natural spawn?

if you guys are seeing small striper you refer to as Rat Stripes that's a good thing. Down lake there are none, period. If they were there I'd catch one now and then. Lots of LM Bass and perch. That's about it.

Start thumping in the mouths of creeks, they'll come. Just not as many south.

This is the same way on Granbury. We went out last weekend and caught maybe 25-30 of the 8-10” variety stripers on Rat-L-Traps. Never seen this many before. I also wonder about a natural spawn. Nothing large. It would be interesting to have a TPWD biologist come on here and give his opinion. We don’t even see those huge boils on the surface when they suck down some shad. Not a huge school, just individual fish. With all the gates opened along the entire Brazos, I’m sure most of the beast stripers went over the edge and either died during the transit or during the drought which followed. Thousands died just below our dam here on Granbury. Some were absolutely humongous and died, according to the BRA, of hypoxia when the water stopped. I pray they have a stocking program in place for stripers and soon. I have never seen so much baitfish around like this year which could be from a number of reasons— less predators, ideal growing conditions, etc

PK sent a huge number of stripers down the brazos during the flood. Water ran for so long you would think that some of those stripers made it to granbury. I'm sure that stripers from Granbury spawned during the floods. A couple years ago after the first flood that filled PK, I was crappie fishing in a cove by Hells gate and that cove was totally filled with 8 inch stripers. You could drop a white jig in the water and instantly catch an 8 inch striper. The fish finder showed fish solid from the surface to 30 feet. Unreal how many were in that cove.

The jury is still out with reference to numbers of keeper stripes. The colder the water temp the closer we get to determine theories of their absence. Lets give it a rest until mid December before we write off PK's striper population and or the lack thereof . The mag sandies and light tackle are fun. Been catching some solid Hybrids to 5 lbs mixed with the SB.
