I was running a lane on Sam Rayburn this weekend and a boat was sitting in the middle of the lane fishing. We came off plane and idled through the area after I saw which way they were throwing and went wide as possible the opposite direction. This is a lane that comes with the boatlanes chip in a high caution area of the lane marked with red +'s. I have only ran this area a couple times so did not want to cut wide on plane as I do not know the area and the lake is low. I received a major stare down from the older gentleman as if I did something wrong. Proper boating etiquette is something I always strive for and try to instill in my son as well. Maybe they thought I was trying to potlick there spot. It's a community hole.

Did I do someting wrong?

This is a hard one, but if your going to default, always default to the safe way (the way you did)

Different people have different views on this, as running through on pad (at a safe distance) causes less disturbance and less wake. Shutting down always sends that wall of wake out.

If Im fishing in a lane of a choke down and someone comes in, ill wave them through as long as I know they are coming.

I shut down way early so not to put any wake on them. Always run by on pad if I know the area.

I am still new to fishing lakes that have boat lanes and I don't fish with anybody that's experienced to teach be about the boat lanes . How does a newbie know where the boat lanes are . Is there specific buoys to mark them ? I have a humming bird helix 7 with a lake master chip as well as navionics on my phone but I just can not convince myself what the different colored lines represent . If I'm fishing and a boat comes screaming by I just assume I'm sitting in a boat lane and I move .

Those plus marked lanes are for normal pool level mainly. It’s getting low enough some may not be safe to run even now. Be careful. There are no marked lanes on Rayburn so unless the other boat has the chip they may not even know they’re in a lane. You did well by playing it safe. Watch those lanes when lake is below pool. There are some good stumps in some of them.

You did the right thing. Some will want you to stay on pad other will want you to idle and others want you to drive out of boat lane. You do what you feel is safe for your boat and passengers and move on. They have the right to be there and you have the right to drive thru but you are responsible if you hit them or your wake causes them damage. You’ll never make everyone happy

Maybe you misinterpreted the stare down. Trust me, my wife can't read my mind, although she is convinced she can.

You arent gonna make everyone happy. I go by however I feel like and dont give it a second thought. If there is a reasonable distance a prefer people go by me on pad.

Appreciate the comments....Have'nt lost any sleep over it.. lol_2 In my 35 years of running boats. I have always tried to be courteous of other fisherman and other boaters. Thought something might have changed.

I was fishing Rayburn Saturday and had boats blowing by me just out of casting distance and it wasn't a boat lane either. As long as they pay attention to the way I'm casting and pass on the opposite side it doesn't really bother me or far enough out in front. When they pass in front and I could knock them outta the boat it makes me want to. If they're setting in a marked boat lane on a card doesn't mean that they are aware of the fact. If they didn't say anything then it probably didn't bother them that much. He might have just been watching to see if your were going to fish on top of him. I always try to treat others they way I'd like to be treated. I had one guy on ray make sure he passed me between me and the bank while I was making casts to the water's edge. I didn't blow my top or even say anything to the guy but I was sure shaking my head in disgust. I think sometimes one guys hole is another's boat lane or so they think. And if you're going to fish in a boat lane or near it you ought to be prepared for traffic.

Thanks for the suggestion . With the helix 7 I only have one Micro SD slot ? I'm using a lake-master chip . Maybe after a new fish finder I will look into a boat-lane chip .
