For all the big talk at Lake Fairfield I decided to make the three hour drive from Austin to fish one of my old favorite lakes. Backing down to the ramp around 7:45 I could see all the hydrilla (something we have none of on Lake Travis where I live) lining the shoreline and my bass fishing weenie was doing cartwheels thinking of the possibilities.

I had a ribbit and a spook tied on and with the grass the ribbit seemed the right choice. Headed to a main lake point that I used to clobber them on and spent the next 30 minutes flailing that ribbit. Nada. Not even a looker. Swapped over the a "bladed jig" ( no sponsors for me so no mention of a brand name). Worked my way back into the creek fishing the outside edges with the bladed jig, but no takers. Had my fav spinnerbait tied on and started working it parallel to the outside edge and finally got a bite. A little over 3 pounds. Ok, I've found what they're doing after about 2 hours and 500 casts. Not really. Fished deep, shallow, inside edge, outside edge, punched the grass, fished grass around trees, fished rocks...ended up with 9 fish and the first fish I caught was the biggest. My 5 best MAY have gone a little under 12 pounds. Based on past stories here if I had fished in a 30 man tournament I would have finished... 42nd. I suck at fishing!

It was a beautiful day though! I love fishing in the fall!

Same story for us on Saturday. Caught all of ours out deep though. Threw frogs, spinnerbaits, chatterbaits, traps and didn't even get a sniff. Deep cranking and c-rigging was good for a few bites, but man that is a boring lake to fish offshore.

Edit: Think my buddy actually stuck one on the trap along the edge of the grass-line but he lost it at the boat.

Is the lake turning over...or has it turned over recently? I usually head down there and fish this time of year a couple of times. But with one report of 30lbs sacks...and your report of 12lbs...maybe the lake is changing? Fronts moving in and maybe just caught it at a bad time? Long drive for me as well...so not sure i want to drive that far now....

My partner caught 5 also, so altogether we had 14, but he didn't catch anything over a pound. Not sure if lake's turning over or not. Water was fairly stained. We marked a ton of bait in the 10' - 15' range. Got a few bites on a CR but they were small. Threw a 6xd quite a bit out in that 10' - 18' zone, but no takers. Couldn't establish a real "pattern" so after 3 hours we basically junk fished. I think we ended up with 5 or 6 on a 200 series bandit. 2 on spinner baits. 2 on rattle trap. 2 on C.R. And 2 flipping. Found a really good hard spot on the end of a point that I used to whack them on near the end of the grass line and caught one on a C.R. the first cast and thought here we go. Not so much.

Oh well. Fairfield is still one of my favorite lakes hot water or not. Saw a couple of bald eagles, and otter enjoying the sun on the dam, a few deer, and there's no houses on the lake so it's very serene. No more "JOHN PICK UP LINE FOUR" from the power plant at first light either!

Next time!

We saw the bald eagles as well! A pair of em flying right over head. One of the great parts about fishing. Out of all the times I've seen bald eagles in TX, I was either fishing or duck hunting on a public lake. The beavers/nutria are also very plentiful out there.

Now that's funny... are you a ticket listener in Austin? They used to say this all the time... well, at least you caught some... so, that's good, right?

I believe the 25 - 30 lb bags almost always come from the same 2 teams or so. I wouldn't expect to catch 25lbs just going to Fairfield. I've only fished it a handful of times but I did have one of my best mornings there on a point with a spook and frog.

You know I am! Grew up in Dallas and lived there my whole life until 3 years ago. Austin is a fun place for an old guy like me...other than all the libtards that live down here. Oh well. It's a good trade off!
