I’m looking at recarpeting my 1994 ranger 488vs. I called ranger and they said the original carpet is 16oz. Ranger said they recarpet all boats now with 24oz carpet but on these older boats you usually have to shave the doors. i was wondering if anyone has dealt with this before. If i have to shave the doors i’d rather just stick with the 16oz original carpet but i was also wondering if i’d be able to maybe do the 20oz carpet without shaving the doors down.

Shaving the doors is no big deal.

I went to 20oz with no problem. Doors a little tight at first but it will loosen up.

I just had my 96 461 done a couple of weeks ago with the 20 oz. All lids work as before.

Where did you all get the carpet redone and (ballpark) how much does it cost to do so?

I believe shaving the doors means shaving the new carpet at the door edges which is common. I would use the better carpet for sure, the only draw backs to it are drying time.

I replaced mine myself. It is not that hard. A little time consuming but overall not that hard.

I did my own on my older boat and it is very time consuming and was a PIA for me and I wasn't really happy with the end result. I will do most any work that needs to be done on the boat myself but I decided that carpeting was worth paying someone else to do.

Seen D’s Work in Sanger it’s top notch. I’ve got wood right now cause I’m picking mine up from him tomorrow.
Solid guy, great work and good pricing.

Can anybody recommend a guy closer to Houston? If not, I suppose I’ll have to plan a trip up north at some point.

I’ve never changed boat carpet before and from the videos i’ve watched it sure does look like a chore, if i had a shop of my own i think i’d give it a shot but with the cold weather up here in north texas i figured i’d rather have some one else do it for me.
