I’m practicing my distance casting below the dam at Possum Kingdom. Any one know the distance from the Do Not Cross line/overhead cable to the backside of the dam?

a better plan is to use a balloon on a day with wind from the south. Tie a chunk of shad or perch onto your hook and put a balloon on your line up about 5 feet using a loop through the knot of the balloon so the line will release once you get a hit. The south wind will drive that balloon up to the dam where big blue cat and stripers lay. I have watched some huge stripers and blue cats be caught this way.

I find bait fishing boring. Much prefer throwing topwater plugs & jigs. Not so concerned about actually catching fish at this time vs. working on casting skills.

So still looking for an answer to my question

Go to google maps and switch to the satellite view. Put your cursor where you want to measure from and right click. A menu will pop up, select the last item labeled "Measure Distance". Then left click on the spot you want to measure to and it will give you the distance. You can also keep adding more waypoints and even join them all together to get an area measurement.

Depends on where you're measuring from but it looks to me to be about 515 feet.

What you do is work as a guide and take people to the cable below PK dam and point your airboat where the propeller is blowing back upstream towards the dam. Now you use balloons as your float and the live stocked rainbow trout in your livewell as your bait and “blow” your bait up towards the dam. You and your clients catch HUGE stripers and you have a bustling business as a striper guide. You get caught illegally using live trout as bait and first time offense causes you to not get a state record striper certified and then when you get caught on your second offense you loose your guide license. Resurface years later as a ”Brazos River kayak guide”. This is a proven system for catching really world class stripers! (Anyone know this story?)

Take plenty of lures. There are decades of 20 test tangled lines in those rocks. Last time went there throwing swim baits I lost a bunch.

I've used my hunting rangefinder for a similar need.. as long as you have a solid target.... FYI..

Thanks Piscivore, great idea, works great. I ended up using the gps functions to place a pin in my starting location and destination, keeping note of the longitude & latitude coordinates it provided. Then entering them as my travel points as if I were walking. I got 500 feet between my points of interest.

Now I can practice in an open field with measurement points mimicking standing on a slippery rock and not moving my legs while casting a 3 oz plug without hooks. smile

Agree, not the best place for submerged plugs or jigs.

No telling how many thousands of spoons are stuck in those rocks!
