I will be staying at Canyon Lake for a while and I made some juglines. I’m just wondering if they will work ok for a few weeks.
I cut a blue pool noodle 6” long and put 30lb braid on it to the swivel at the bottom weight and then put two swivels one at 5ft and one at 2ft with a 30lb braid 1ft extension and then a hook.

Will the 30lb braid break too easily on fish?

Will it work for a few weeks until I can make nice ones?

I made 5 so far. Hoping they’re not a waste.

Thanks.

I wouldn't do it. I prefer the heavier line (tarred twine) 'cause it's easier on my hands. Hand landing a large-ish cat, with 30lb braid (roughly the diameter of 6lb mono), is going to be real tough on your hands. I'm not convinced that leather gloves would make it much better.

I like the tarred nylon twine because it doesn't fray or catch on hooks as easily. I use 30# monofilament for the leader on my noodle sticks.

All these fellow are correct. Braid will slice through your hand like a butter knife through bologna. Remember I make and sell handlne reels called Ciuban yoyos, even wrote a book on the subject. In the open ocean guys use 200 and 300 lbs mono for handlines. To me jug fishing is just another kind of handline.

I typically use 50lb mono on my jugs. It's easy enough on my hands and string enough not to break even the biggest fish off.

Remember with jugline you don't have a flexible rod or eve na shock leader of a handline to absorbed the shock. Given the relatively short line on jugs, you have to make up for that in brute strength.

Walmart and academy sell black tarred lines in the fishing area that is perfect for jugs. I use about 100 pound. Just make sure to add egg sinker to line otherwise it tries to float.

On the Salt River in Kentucky when I was stationed at Ft. Knox I used para cord to a big swivel to 50 or 60 pound mono. Para cord was fairly easy on the hands. for the "jug" it was the swim noodle cut in two six inch sections and placed on either end of a chunk of mop handle. On most we also put a strip of reflective tape so it was easier to see with a spotlight.

UPDATE:
I made some more. Couldn't find tar line but i did buy nylon twisted string for trot lines. I also bought some big swivels and catfish #4 hooks. I put a window weight on the bottom, and put 5 swivels on the main line. at each swivel i have a knot above and below it. Then i have 12" leaders coming off the main line with no swivel and with a hook. the leader is made of the same nylon twisted string. Foam noodle at top. all around 35 ft long.

I put them out today at 9 am and then checked them at 1 pm so far. Only one fish on one and it got off when i tried to net it.

the problem is that most of the leaders are twisted around the main line. Why is that?

Should i put a swivel at the bottom at the weight?

Should i clip the clasp part off the swivels that go to the leaders? i feel the clasps are catching the main line and then twisting up.

The snagging and twisting are largely due to the line. You'll be happier once you get some "tarred" line. I still have a few rigs using the line you describe. After a good cat has been on them a few minutes, the tangle is so bad, I just cut it off and re-rig with tarred line. Here's one to look up - SGT KNOTS Tarred Twine.
Something I like to do is peg a small(ish) cigar float on the main line, above my hooks (just one, between the noodle-float and the first hook). It keeps my baits spread out vertically and lets the rig work different depths.

I had that trouble too when using string leader line. So on drifting juglines I just use one hook tied to end of string and I use to put a second hook up higher by literally just tying an over hand knot making a 3-4 inch loop with the top hook in the loop. This worked great and rarely got twisted and is something you could experiment with. Yes some catfish will spin and make a mess but fewer times then one would think. On stationary juglines I actually prefer weed eater string for mainline and leader line and it rarely twists. Use electric fence cable crimps and just crimp it to a barrel swivel and hook or above and below the beads and barrel swivels of the mainline! Works great.
