Chasing records is fun until you have to certify them. I have broken at least 3-4 records on a body of water that I used to fish regularly. I just enjoy the personal satisfaction. Maybe I will deal with the paperwork someday.

Great thing about chasing records is that you go in with the mindset that you are only trying to catch ONE big fish, not numbers of fish.

By the way, are you chasing these monsters from your kayak or the bank?

So I am thinking of trying to get the Lake Arlington record also. It is 49 lbs for flathead. This is getting crazy. All I need is more free time.

How do you target these record fish? I would assume with very large live bait? Maybe like a 3lb carp?

LOL. Well my bait size is a 6 inch Perch. On a 8-10 size hook. I try to use bait that they would naturally chase. Night time is the best time for Flatheads. And the winter they almost stop eating. They slow way down.

Nice sounds like a solid plan.

Fishing a 6in bluegill after dark my catch you a lot of record-size fish not just flatheads!

Good luck mate!

Well Done Sirjet. I suspect you are much like me and always enjoyed competing in sports. Catching records can really give you that outlet. It gives you competition, goals and most of all a journey. The journey of learning and experimenting until finally you catch it by accident, it seems. But with any sport you just didn't recognize the improvements you made through the season. Keep up the quest thumb

Very, Very, Very competitive. I am now in the process of looking into 3 lakes to try to get the cat record. Joe Pool, Lake Arlington, and Lake bridgeport. This has been fun.

Go get um Jet!
My personal yella cats have mostly been river fish. The best bait I’ve ever found for them was mud cats or live carp about 10-12”. When I could not get these I’d buy goldfish. I can honestly say i’ve Never caught a cat on goldfish. I have accidentally caught bass w them though. They do stay alive well but you are on the right track with big perch. Just my 2 cents! Good luck on your quest! Can’t wait for the pics! thumb
