They are test patterns but when i was a young kid in Lubbock back when TV stations went off the air at the end of night . It meant it was time for bed period !

Hate to sound like an old talking about "back in the good ol days" but this is so true. When you weren't in school you were outside. During daylight hours, we could have been anywhere within miles of the house. Parents would have freaked if they knew some of the crazy stuff we were doing. Bottom of our feet were like leather from constantly running around barefoot. After dark we were confined to an area within hailing distance. Every family with children had a distinct way of calling their brood. Either a distinct whistle, cowbell, dinner triangle etc.. Still can hear my dads distinctive whistle, Seems like it could be heard for at least a block. When you heard it you better drop what you're doing and head to the house. Got to where just by the tone, you could tell if you were just being called to come home for dinner/bed or if you better get your butt home as you're in trouble. D@mn, now that I think of it those were the good ol days, not that I would ever want to give up some of today's comfort conveniences. And yes I do remember the “it’s 10 o’clock do you know where your children are” Came on during the nightly news, I believe in my case it was right after Harold Taft (The World's Greatest Weatherman) gave the last weather update.

I grew up in Lubbock as well. Sounds like we watched the same TV channel. But back then we only had two choices. Channel 11 or 13. Channel 28 (ABC) wasn't available at that time.

Where I lived, TV signed back on in the mornings with the National Anthem playing, and pictures of the flag waving and jets flying. That couldn't happen today. Someone might be offended.

These images were soon replaced by the scrambled screen of HBO and Skinamax boobies. Which is maybe why I was attracted too deformed women at a young age.

I remember watching the "scary show" on Saturday night with my best friend. Pillows, blankets and Jiffy-Pop. We were always mad and ready for more when the Test Pattern came on.

Most stations (if not all) played the National Anthem before the aforementioned pics showed up.

I'm not old enough to remember TV not being Color but I did see some old B&W sets from time to time.

All you needed was a descrambler but that was later!

We got a Satellite Antenna in 1981 before MTV debuted and there were no scrambled channels then.

It was strange watching Network shows without commercials in them although there were pauses (ie periods of black screen) where the commercials were added at the local stations.
