Discussion: Paying out AOY spots in local trails

What do people think about trails paying Angler of the Year spots out at the end of the season? Say, in Basschamps, TTT, TTZ or something of the like.

I have no relationship with any of those organizations other than being a competitor.

I think it would be a good incentive to payout say, the top 5 or 10 in points at the end of the year. An AOY title is a great, if not the best, indicator of good performance from an angler and team over a season. If you need the money for this pot you could bump entries just a small amount and cover it by the end of the season. For example, if you bumped Basschamps entry by just $30 and had an average of 200 boats each tournament, you could have $24,000 to payout the top 5 or top 10 in just one region.

1st - $9600
2nd - $6000
3rd - $4800
4th - $2400
5th - $1200

Or you could extend it even further.

What’s your opinions on this? Pros, cons, problems? Has it been considered and decided against? And if so why? Does it help or hurt turnout? Problems keeping people honest?

TTO does this now, I believe they started it last year. It pays the AOY winner and I believe it has been well received. I personally think its a great idea. I don't think that it would take much throughout the course of an entire season to make a significant pot, as your example above indicates. A trail could either take a portion of each entry or increase membership dues to make up this pot.

Great idea overall.

I only fish champs and honestly not interested in them monitizing angler of the year. I understand they are a business and need to make money and want them around for a long time. What I would like to see is about every 4 th year or so only the top 25 in each region advancing to a smaller neutral championship. This would open up a lot of lakes.

Nope. Paying into a AOY pot is a sucker bet for 90% of competitors. You’re just giving money away.

Pretty sure they still get paid in the form of free entries for the next year, atleast champs and TTT used to do that

Having an AOY payout doesn’t get you any additional entries as a tournament organizer in my opinion so it’s a waste of time and money.

I would agree with this. To win AOY you have to be finishing in the money and the free entry the following year is a cash reward.

100%...
Squeezing the field even more to compensate teams that are already receiving benefits is a surefire way to reduce the field.

My last few years I'd be lucky to get a participation ribbon.

Seems odd to publicly recognize it as an accomplishment if it has absolutely ZERO value.

I haven't heard anyone complain about the $10 of every entry in TTO going to AOY payout...and it certainly didn’t decrease the number of teams that have entered. Maybe Donnie or Darryl can chime in with feedback.

There are certainly people like you that only recognize value based on dollars. There is value to the achievement, but it seems you likely need someone to explain it to you.

Get your pink panties out of a wad sister. I was referring to the way many tournament trails feel about the AOY. Not necessarily the way I feel about it. It clearly has no value to many of the tournament trail(s) because they feel they cant turn it into a MONETARY VALUE (aka more entries). Just seems odd that many make a big deal about it at every tournament and on social media yet pay nothing for it.

In my personal opinion winning AOY means more than winning an individual tournament. Way more in fact. Personally I like the structure the OP suggested.
