https://www.cbsnews.com/news/amber-...-reacts-to-sentencing-and-emotional-hug/mother of the slain bothan jean says "do not misconstrue the hug his brother gave to amber guyger, there's plenty of blame to go around"... hopefully I'm wrong but that sounds like they will probably sue the police dept/city of Dallas..... had a close friend whose son and several friends were out walking on a frozen pond and his son broke through the ice and drowned….he was approached by several law firms trying to get him to sue the ponds owner for damages...he refused to do it and told me later that he just couldn't accept money because every penny of it that he would spend, would just be reminder of his son's death plus he didn't feel the farmer that owned the pond was negligent nor liable for what happened... I always admired him and hoped I'd never have to face a situation like his but that if I did,I'd show as much class as he did... what's your thoughts on a situation like this...

Depends on the situation. If someone's negligence, carelessness or mistakes caused their death it would probably be considered. The Gugyger situation is not like the situation you posted.
Would you?....if that were your son would an apology be enough? I cannot honestly say it would be for me in that situation. I also doubt I would have as much forgiveness as his brother did. I think I would be pissed, angry, sad and quite frankly probably vengeful. Hopefully time would help me deal with it and think more clear minded. Hard call. I'm not gonna fault a family that has lived through something like that though no matter what they choose.

I'm not buying the pond analogy. That event, although tragic, was totally self inflicted. The Jean/Guyger deal was the exact opposite.

Who would they sue? I'm certain they will because they were surrounded by lawyers but who to sue? A jailed ex-police officer?
I suspect they will sue the city because of the comment that if the police would have taught her not to shoot in the heart her son would be alive.
I figure that has as much chance of a win as suing paper target printers for putting the highest score over the heart.

I'm not buying the pond analogy. That event, although tragic, was totally self inflicted. The Jean/Guyger deal was the exact opposite. the question I meant to raise was that if given the opportunity to sue and collect a large sum of money due to the death of a family member, would you do it? personally, due to the high cost of funerals/burial etc,I might accept enough to pay those expenses but I'd like to think that would be all I would accept.....

She showed some tendencies that were brought out in the trial that raised questions about her character. Not sure what the police department should have done about some of her background but I wouldn't be surprised if the lawsuit will claim she should not have been on the police force.

I'm sorry, but the faulty lock manufacturer is at least partially to blame for this....and yes, I'd look at a lawsuit against them...and against the apartment complex for not differentiating between floors by using different paint colors/schemes to alert residents that they were on the wrong floor.

I might take a contract on a couple of my family members.

I, for some reason, thought the fire department was involved in identifying information on commercial establishments. I worked at a hospital and the FD was heavily involved in how things were numbered. The response to an emergency in this apartment complex would apparently be a disaster (pun intended).
