So I would love to have an I pilot trolling motor but am not really in a place to buy one. At least new. Is it crazy to consider a used one?

Nope, look around and you may find a good deal on refurbished ones. Once the Lowrance & Garmin motors hit the market a good used ultrex will be easy to find

some manufactures have refurbished with a warranty, at reduced prices..

I have bought a used one, a reconditioned one and a new one and all have worked just fine for me. If you want the more accurate spotlock then make sure that you look at the Bluetooth models.
