Got a question for the jig guys.. I’ve been a jig guy for years, caught more big fish in it than any other bait. Started off with Stanley jigs and because of ease to get switched to Strike King. Have used Strike King pro model for years. Lately while trying to fish the jig it gets hung up every time I throw it in the water. Man I know they get hung up but I mean it’s crazy. Has SK changed the hook or weed guard? They look like the older model heads but they hang up on everything. Makes me not want to even tie it on. I’ve been pegging a sinker and throwing a craw worm or creature type bait just to help with the hanging up issue. Anyone else having a issue like this or am I just having crappie luck..

The one thing I found was while I was throwing jigs, rod tip placement was key to reducing the amount of hangups I got. I like to drag my jigs, but if I drag my jigs anything lower than 3 PM with my rod tip I hang more. Another thing to think about is line...I found that older line seems to sink more and have a tendency to droop when using a jig. If I use crisp flouro on my jigs, I tend to get hung up less. This is only my .02 take it for what you will... I know there's going to be smarter folks than me chiming in any second.

Have you tried going to a football head jig ? I see you are in Huntington so figure you fish Rayburn where the football head jig works great. I do buy the jigs that have a vertical line tie that seems to me, not getting hung up as much as horizonal jigs. Seems the horizonal gets under wood easier and hangs up more. Just my opinion.

Oh yes rod tip position is key. Lift a jig don’t drag. Line type makes a difference. If it’s stained I’ll throw braid. Just pull it loose. I like fluorocarbon too. But will throw it on big game also

Rod angle is big as well as how you work the jig. You do need to work it with some finesse as you move through cover if that makes sense. Any hard pulls or quick jerks will certainly get the point of the hook in contact with the cover. I think about how you roll a crankbait through cover, it's all about guiding the bait but not pulling. Also trim your guard a little, that will stiffen the bristles up some and shorten them so that the end is not making as much contact with the cover and the bait can slide better. I personally believe head design is a big deal in how a bait rolls around but everyone has their preference.

Fish a jig a lot as well. My experience is that a bass will take a jig almost immediately. I may twitch my rod tip a couple of times but generally not too many times. I just pick it up and replace it back in. I like jig heads that have a point to them, not saying I don't use others, it's just my preference.

I need a jig fishing lesson and you have a reputation as a ‘“big fish catcher,” so are you available as an instructor andI what is your fee.? Also are you willing to walk up a hill to bring trailer to ramp? Also is there a different between a football and a basketball jig.?

I fish Rayburn when I’m home, I fish between the 147 and the 103 most. I have used a football but not for timber. It might just be bad run of luck. I love jig fishing so I’ll figure something out. I just thought I had missed something. Thanks everyone

I switched to Mark Pack's jigs and have lost only three jigs this summer pitching into cedars.

I suggest you try the 6th Sense Hybrid jig. It has a broader head so it does not fall over on its side

If I'm getting hung too often, its typically because I'm fishing too fast.
I always trim the weed guard to just behind the point of the hook. I also find jigs with beaver style trailers as opposed to craw trailers are less likely to get hung up.
I had a hard time sticking with a jig because of constant hangups. I really began throwing them this year after I ordered some jigs from screwy lewy lures. I absolutely love them and get hung up way less.
But the more I fished them the better I got, and now can pretty much throw most of the available jigs without getting hung up that often. But if you are fishing a jig where fish live, hangups are part of it.
Those $6 lure retrievers from academy work as well on jigs as they do on crankbaits.

Try these in place of a jig. Works great on new thick brush when paired with a creature bait. Much more snag resistant than any jig and gets the same bites.

Try the Viper XP jig. Those work well for me.

If I am hanging up too much I lighten the jig weight. I prefer a 3/4oz but sometimes you just have to go lower.

Lol I got a lure retriever and use it all the time. And yes unless you snagged in old nylon trot line string it will get it out almost every time. The new ones at Academy dont have the little chains. Both of mine do. Worth every penny! Saved tons of lures! I think I’m going to try a different style jig. See if it helps. Feels like I’m pitching a 1/2 oz snagging treble hook right now lol
