I know its hot now and very low water flow but would anyone be interested in doing a float trip down the Brazos sometime in late October early November? Was thinking maybe a 3 day trip on the 20 mile stretch below pk

I would possibly be interested. I certainly want to see what this recent fish kill is doing, but it can be a fun trip. I have done it a few times in a canoe, but never in a kayak. Would be fun to learn how to really downsize camp gear.

I’d be glad to, we have had very good luck at night for blues and flatties-
I first did that 20 mile in 1978 with my first wife, been going off and in since then-
My grandson is 13 now and this will be his 6th trip-
There has been very little change in scenery over the years and it’s cool to think he will make that same trip many years after I’m gone-
I took his dad the first time when he was 11-
If you get a chance to take one of your kids I highly recommend it-
Later in October we plan on taking a 9 year old grandson also to keep it going in the family-

You may know this already, but I learned to downsize my canoe camping gear by using a backpacking gear list. Supplemented by a few luxury items like a cot, ice chest, and camp chair.

Well we made it back, only did 2 days because of that weather that was supposed to come through Sunday night.
The river was running around 180 cfs so it made for a good float, and never had to get out and drag even once, it was close sometimes but there was enough flow that it never happened-
We caught bass while we went down river and catfish during the night, didn’t get the flathead that we targeted, and we usually do, so not sure why that was, but it was a great trip as usual-
We had all you can eat catfish Saturday night, that fresh caught and cooked catfish is hard to beat-
We may make another trip in October but if not, the next time will be in the spring, love this part of the Brazos-
Here is some pics of the scenery for those that haven’t seen it by chance-

Great pictures/sounds like a fun trip!

I had heard/read that the low flows plus high temps was causing the stripers to go belly up. Did you see anything like that?

I did see just a very few, no more than usual though, seems like we see that to some degree each year-
It seems to mainly affect the stripers though, overall-
We caught bass the whole trip, three drum also, while passing some other fisherman we saw some really nice bass being pulled in a couple of times-
Caught more than enough catfish at night for dinner, threw several back the next morning-

Most of the river you could go upstream, but not below the “rapids” or the more narrow parts of the river-
From Rochelles hwy 4 bridge upstream would have been tough right now to do that, from the hwy16 bridge you could go down quite a ways and get back as long as you didn’t go past those first rapids about 3-4 miles down-
I did not see anyone going up towards the dam from the launch at why 16, but I bet some young strong guys may have been able to, I just didn’t see any while I was there launching-
