Just curious if the reds have moved to the damn to spawn yet. And if not about when does it start. I know the weather and time of year has some to do with it.

From September through November, anglers head to the Gulf of Mexico for the chance to catch a fish of a lifetime as huge bull reds — actually female red drum — move from the open waters of the gulf to spawn near the beaches and passes.

At the same time, newly sexually mature male and female redfish leave the bays, where they've grown up, and head to the thick of the spawn.

Luckily for anglers, the mating ritual doesn't dampen their appetite, which translates into plenty of chances of hooking them.

Luckily for San Antonio-area anglers, they don't need to go all the way to the coast to get in on the action.

The Texas Parks & Wildlife Department stocks tens of thousands of the saltwater species in Calaveras Lake, one of only three in the state to get redfish. They thrive in freshwater. In just a few years, they can grow to whoppers topping 30 inches and 20 pounds.

While freshwater reds are identical to their saltwater cousins, right down to the timing of the spawn, they cannot reproduce. Plus, unlike the saltwater species, which require a red drum tag to keep one fish above the 28-inch maximum length, freshwater reds have no maximum length. The daily bag limit is three.

Get with Manny Martinez. He knows all about the redfish “spawn†on Calaveras. I went with him one time and we caught a bunch of reds casting spoons by the dam. It was in the fall. Major fun !

Manny actually caught the lake record casting at the dam.

For Channel Cats Big Marvs, Blue Cat's, cut bait such as shad,Bluegill, etc. Reds, Gold Spoons or Chartreuse Grubs. Or you can use cut bait! thumb

For the spawn you have to run up the river as far as you can, white grubs and ultra lite works best.....oh wait a second,,, bang

I fished Caleveras with ultra lights. They were so bright and really attracted the bait fish. banana
