Hey, my unrestricted state record southern stingray is the Texas Parks and Wildlife Catch of the Month on the records and awards page. That's fun. I caught the stingray using my Plnor (Pole and Line NO Reel) fishing method. The stingray was 88.3 pounds and 85.5 inches long. It was released after the weight and measurement were taken. I will try and get a YouTube video of the catch up on my Osborn Fishing channel in the next couple of weeks.

Nice catch congrats on the record and award.
Looking forward to seeing the video
Must have been a heck of a fight especially getting of the bottom.
How do you avoid being cut by the barb when it gets close and getting into the boat?

The first thing to do when you catch a barbed stingray is to remove the barb. When you land the stingray stay away from it till it calms down. Do not grab the wings or head. The barbed tail is made to whip around to protect the body and head. Once the stingray is calm, locate the barb on the tail. It is not on the end of the tail but closer to the body. Grab the tail well back from the barb and keep the tail from flexing. Carefully slide pliers between the tail and barb. Grab the barb with the pliers at the base and bend up, breaking the barb off. Be careful that there are not multiple barbs. You can now handle the stingray. Because of the size of this stingray I had to use a knife and pliers. This replicates normal damage to the barb and the barb will grow back. Do not just cut off the tail. Cutting off the tail effects the stingray swimming and the tail does not grow back.

The dried barb makes a great souvenir and when you look at how it is barbed you will realize why you do not want to have it under your skin.

Since I am always fishing for records, I carry 2 digital certified and registered scales. One weighs up to 10 pounds and the other weighs up to 300 pounds. It was a calm day so we were able to weigh the stingray on the boat. That allowed us to release it.
