I made a trip out to Welsh to check out the repairs to the lot, approach and staging area. When I got there, there were two guys from SWEPCO reviewing the final repairs. Turns out, they were the primary guys who supervised and worked on the project.
They did a great job! They added five 18” drain pipes which were reinforced with cement and rock. They fixed the giant pot holes, leveled out parking lot, added a gravel pathway up to the parking lot and put down a thick base of crushed asphalt to the approach and the boat staging area.

I asked them what changed, SWEPCO never seemed to care about the ramp. They said they got a new plant manager in January and he had a different outlook about the facility. They spent about $25K on the lot so far. They said the rock and pipes were left over from other projects so that saved some resources.

They are out of funds now but in January the plant manager is going to put another $25/K in the 2020 budget to expand the parking lot and “pave” (with crushed asphalt or maybe flexbase) all the way to the tree line and add some parking cement blocks to help “mark” parking spots.

They area also going to add some boat “parking “ to pick up your partner to the left of the ramp looking at the ramp. They have already cleared some of the brush there. I asked if they could use some of the same crushed asphalt to make a path from the ramp to the new boat staging area. They said they would try and get that done but it will have to be next year.

Unfortunately they cannot touch the ramp. That is owned by the county. The lake is about 2 feet low and you can see in the picture how bad, silted in the ramp is.

Here are a few pictures. I’ll put more on the photos page.

While many will cheer, IMO the lake used to be an uncrowded gem. Pot holes and bad ramps kept many away, and of course Monticello and the others were still running as well. Anyway, it is going to be ugly on the weekends this winter and I for one am going to work on becoming a better cold water fisherman.

See you on the lake and have a great day!

Thanks to them for improving the facility! Now, if the county would step up and dredge the ramp!

A dozen or so strong backed volunteers with flat edged scoop shovels could do some good improving the ramp by hand.

Just a thought

I have always heard that Welsh and the other power plant lakes in that area were overcrowded in the Winter anyway. Improvements never hurt. You want primitive? Try Lake Pinkston.

A couple of buddies were out there this weekend fishing. They ran into a game warden, so they asked him why the lake was so low. He told them the pump at the Lake O' Pines outlet, down by the damn, went out. It had been down several weeks before someone noticed it and has taken even longer to get it replaced. Suppose be down 3', so it would be an good time to dredge the ramp.

How far does that ramp go down? Thought about going around beginning of October but don’t want to get there and can’t launch.

Never seen Welsh down 3’. Ought to get a good look at a favorite rockpile that sits in 30’ of water out front of the cooling towers. How was the fishing? I know it was hot but was it hot?

The guys from SWEPCO said the water temp at the intake was 94 the day I was there (only temp they record).

They also said one of the two generators remaining was going offline starting this past Monday for five weeks of maintenance.

Jaguar, my buddies had no problem launching and they said there were 8 to 10 other trailers in the parking lot.

Is there a pot hole on one side of the ramp. Remember someone mentioning this a few weeks back.

I don't know about a pot hole, but one side has more silt than the other. I always try to stay right of center.

Thx GTrigg. Assume that means right as you face the lake?

That would be correct Greg or driver's side if backing down the ramp.

Did they say when the pump would be fixed and the lake would be back up?
