Hey y'all! I'm an outdoors writer here in Texas, wondering if y'all know where I can find someone who fishes all the time because they need to put food on the table. Any pointers for me? Thanks.

I'm not sure fishing guides would fit the bill. The way I read it he's looking for someone who fishes because that's the only way they can get something to eat, as opposed to someone who fishes because it's their hobby or job.

Trying to be!

I've written a couple books on Texas rivers (the Sabine and the Blanco) and do a lot of magazine writing. One of my editors asked me to find a person (or people) who fish not so much for the hobby as for the harvest—because it's an important part of their diet.

When I was younger, what my brother and I caught went a long way towards making the food budget work.

Assuming your post is sincere, don't be too choosy about what kind of fish you'll eat. You can catch plenty of buffalo, which will provide lots of food.

I do know a few guys who fish for Buffalo for food at Lake Ray Hubbard. I believe they hold a tournament of sorts every Saturday at the Chaha Boat Ramp at John Paul Jones Park.

I do not do this; but I have the stories; as I fished with many of them during my early days 50 years ago. I made it a point to fish with these men to learn how to catch fish that no one else was catching. I was into the tournament thing and it was the best thing I ever did to fish with these old guys that were putting food on the table Rain OR Shine.

This is a lost art and you are not going to find many of those old timbers that are dedicated to the table fair.

You must be Wes Ferguson...author of a book I bought and enjoyed reading a few years ago titled "Running the River...Secrets of The Sabine". Growing up on the Sabine, I enjoyed your book and all the great photography. Good luck with your future adventures!

I know a man who is homeless. He fishes for bass in Irving and Dallas ponds. He's good.
I've seen him catch and release, and he's taken a few for dinner.

I've also meet plenty of Indian folks who fish for food at the local ponds. They'll eat anything they catch.

Go down to Squaw Creek Reservoir any weekend and wait at the cleaning station and you will see plenty of anglers who are after meat. They use cast nets to catch tilapia and they are not there for fun.

I'm retired and fish multiple times a week. Fish I catch is on the table several times a week.

Might need to visit the coast. I'd imagine not many fit what your looking for. I'd also add if they are eating fish everyday they prolly have high levels of mercury.
