I'm looking at buying a used boat but it has some keel damage on it. Its a woodless nauticstar and the damage is about 8" long. The owner did it four years ago and never got it patched. The fix is relatively easy but I'm worried about potential long term damage.

Should I work a deal or run away?

The exposed fiberglass needs to be ground out and laid up with new glass and gelcoated. This should be reflected in the selling price. I would get a shop estimate first. Glass work is more expensive than you might think.

Personally, I would pass on that one. If the owner did not fix obvious damage, what did he not fix that you can't see.

use it as a negotiating factor...
Then buy some marine tex epoxy, prepare as instructed, and fix it.... The repair (if done right) will outlast you and your grandkids.

Is that right ??

Slap some marine tex on it then install a keel guard.

NauticStar has no wood in it, but it is likely there is water intrusion to the hull. It would absolutely require a qualified glass guy to examine the damage and determine the potential for water damage.

However, I would walk away. This type of damage and lack of care by an owner tells me he didn't give a damn about the boat, and I wouldn't buy a boat that has been abused.

I think it is more that he lacked the knowledge or maybe common sense that it could be something that needs attention. He was probably thinking there is no hole and the fiberglass is ok. A lot of boat owners do not understand the functional purpose of gel cost. There are others that are just as not particular as others about fixing something like that. Like someone else said I would inspect the fiberglass, repair the gel coat, and slap a keel guard on. No boat that ever touches a beach should be with out one.

Iā€™d rather buy one like that, instead buying one that an owner half assed and tried to hide with marine Tex and a keel guard. Lol.

Two sides to this arguement.

This is really the issue. His local marine shop told him not to worry about it because it was relatively minor so he never did anything.

I got quotes on getting it fixed and I put in an offer on the boat as-is so that I can be sure the repair job is done the way I want it and not a cram job.

Thanks for the input guys.

THOSE TWO PICS ARE REALLY CLOSE UPS. GOUGED GEL COAT APPEARS TO BE 4-5 INCHES LONG ? IT IS A COSMETIC REPAIR AND IF NOT FIXED IT WOULD LOOK THE SAME 10 YEARS FROM NOW. ESTIMATE 450.00 - 500.00 TO FIX AND MAYBE 3-5 DAYS IF SCHEDULED. JOHNSON'S FIBERGLASS
