What rod you throwing at them...

2 - 6oz of lead, possibly need spider weight (lead with copper legs). Swivel, 18" leader to Circle hook ( 4/0 - 7/0) is fine. Cut mullet, cut menhaden, Live or Dead Shrimp, or crab. I like the crab best as it seems to last longer. You can even use a live crab. If you buy crab for bait, retain your reciept on you while fishing and make sure you don't have any sponge (egg) bearing females in you're bag.

Where you're out of the current you can get away with much less weight. might be good to beef up the leader a bit.. 25 to 40 is sufficient for leader in the surf or pass for bull reds.

the general rule for shock leaders is 10# per 1oz of lead and atleast twice your rod length.

i use a fishfinder type setup. i slide a swivel snap on to the shock leader then a bead then tie another swivel snap to the end of the shock leader. a sinker/spider weight goes on the sliding swivel snap. and a length of flourocarbon with a circle hook on to the other swivel snap. during the summer when the sharks are around i use stainless steel leaders.
