anyone ever tried this? My grandson like to fish in the tree tops a lot instead of the water. I'm thinking of putting some 20lb braid on his rig so I don't lose so much gear. Any thoughts.

Stealth or Fireline works better with that type reel due to their stiffness.

At the risk of sounding like a smart azz...….. spend some time in the back yard casting to a cup. Make a game out of it, he'll be casting better than you in no time!

Never tried it but as sensitive as that type of reel is to friction, I suspect it wouldn't cast well after the braid gets wet and absorbs water.

Grandson is only 4. No such thing as practice at that age. Just fun with grandpa in the boat thing.

I put braid on my wife's Zebco. Worked good but I found it easier just to leave her at home.

I have tried braid on them and it worked most of the time. Sometimes it skips the catch on the spinner head assembly and creates a mess. A stiff braid would create the worst problem.

It should be fine. Just make sure you start spooling the reel with a few yards of mono so that the braid doesn't slip when put under strain. Could even use yellow braid so your grandkid can "see" the line move!

Braid will make it harder to break the line when he gets hung up. Just move away from the tree tops and fish where he is less likely to get hung up.

braid is fine, wife used it for years. 15-20 pound works great. spray it every couple months with line spray, and wipe it down.

When my young grandkids want to go, that's a day to sit under a bridge and vertical fish for crappie. It would drive me crazy spending the day fixing errant casts, tangles or catching a hook in the back of the head

Don't fish in an area with a lot of obstacles until he's better at casting. I'd also mix in some vertical fishing for crappie or catfish. Fishing has got to be FUN for kids or they won't want to go with you.

I would stick with 10 pound mono for kids. Braid could be a safety issue for a 4 year old.
The solution to any problem - work, love, money, whatever - is to go fishing, and the worse the problem, the longer the trip should be. --John Gierach
