The cooler water goes without saying. Watch Ken Smith's interview with tpw biologist Todd Driscoll about oxygen systems, dissolved oxygen and water temps. It explains everything. Todd doesn't even run his pumps during a tournament. Only to fill in the morning. No need to if you have pure oxygen system

I have had these in my last 2 boats. They work great. First thing I put in my new boat.

so they actually work?

I have the oxygenator but don’t have a switch that I can turn them on I thought they came on when you turn you aerators on. Should there be a switch somewhere that I am not seeing??

The research is all out there.. TPWD has done extensive tests on them both..

Call Randy Myers At SA TPWD office and he can provide you with all the research info..

I use a Mr. Bubbles bubbler. The big one with two outputs. On all the time bait or fish is in livewell.

Then my livewell pump pumps in freshwater on a flow rite livewell timer. It can be on one minute and off between zero and 12 minutes depending on what timer delay setting i use.

Cheap and effective. I think the key is always going to be freshwater exchange. Mine pumps in fresh and overflows out the old. Has worked well for me for over a decade. No fancy expensive setups or oxygen bottles or valves that stick and break.

If i have to keep fish or bait overnight i get two 5 gallon buckets with lids full of water from the dock when i load boat on trailer. Every 4-5 hours i will scoop out 5 gallons.....and add 5 gallons of new to replicate the fresheater exchange.

This works great in theory. Right up until you pull a fish out of 75deg water from 20'+ of water and throw it in a livewell that is 90deg.
Bad things ARE going to happen for the fish. Might not be immediately but run him around all day and your not helping him at all.
I pretty much do as you do but I fish primarily shallow water. I still watch them and add ice, meds, etc at the first sign of trouble. I have still lost fish. If I was a deep water guy, there is no way I wouldn't dope up my livewells first thing in the morning and keep them comfortable all day.

So oxygenators are pointless?

Even in they research they confirm that the Oxygenator does generate (increase) DO over doing nothing They do not debunk the claims that the oxygenator generates pure oxygen through electrolysis. Those that report typically state it is insufficient in and of itself.
There is no study to my understanding that takes the modern system and runs it as intended with cooler [no more than 10 degrees] water, livewell pumps running, and an appropriate water treatment. And compares only the one variable on DO and fish health over the course of a tournament day.

If the Oxygenator is hard wired with no switch, it is always on... Some of the newer installations are including a switch either in the rigging compartment or at the console so that it can be deactivated without cutting wires in environments where it can be detrimental to fish Health.

I think they mean add a switch so you can turn them off on lakes with high salt content

I'd love to do the test, but as I noted in the video series DO meters start at around $1,500 and "Ken Smith Fishing's" current biggest sponsor "Ken Smith the Insurance Guy" won't cut the check for that particular apparatus for this study...

Do note, again, that when we talk about O2 systems we are NOT talking about Oxygenators, different animals.

Truthfully i just wanted to use the word "apparatus" in a post.

Let me put it this way, you won't need anything else. I don't even use ice in the summer anymore. I just run re-circulate and the fish are SO lively when I take them out for weigh-in. Try them. You won't be sorry.
