I just ordered a new reel today and now I’m all paranoid. Got an old (dusty) rod I’m gonna put it on to start with.

Gee love reading this stuff. Glad I have my man card. Wife only buys you something because it's self perceived leverage. Solution - never let them buy you things. So if your wife offers to buy you a new boat you're gonna say no? Will never offer to do that. So, no worries

Go to Catfish&Carp YouTube channel. Look for his "I Reveal My Fishing Secrets" video. He refuses to reveal his fishing secrets under torture. Then the torturer threatens to tell his wife how much he actually spends on fishing gear. He spills his guts. 
He is truly a sick individual.

Oh my wife wanted me to buy a pontoon boat, aka mini van of the lake! I put my foot down and bought a bad [censored] bay boat behind her back. Best decision ever, she swore she would never go on it and I’ll be damned, she has only went once in 6 months we have owned it. About once a week she makes a comment about how she hates the tug boat in our drive way.
