The manufacturing side of Ford had already cut costs and did not get TARP funds, but Ford got a huge government loan. Ford's CEO drove to DC to ask for government money. Ford got a $5,900,000,000 government loan to develop fuel-efficient cars at about the same time GM got TARP money. So Ford did get a bailout, they just tapped a different source of government money.

Wonder how GM and Chrysler's credit is after the US bailed them out in 2008-09. Seems I recall GM's bankruptcy cost the US 51 billion.

The Treasure Dept. made $2,100,000,000 off of GM by the time everything was settled. They made $2,400,000,000 off of GMAC.

You said loan, so I assume that means you have to pay it back vs. A bailout.

Ford is most likely smarter than I am, but I question their marketing plan to quit selling cars (except the Mustang and a Focus model) in the US and put their faith in pickup trucks and SUVs with mostly small displacement turbo motors. Seems like they are really taking a gamble with a very fickle buying public.

The “Ford took no government money” is a simplistic statement. Ford’s CEO asked Congress for up $9,000,000,000 in credit, and said “In addition to our plan, we are also here today to request support for the industry. In the near-term, Ford does not require access to a government bridge loan. However, we request a credit line of $9 billion as a critical backstop or safeguard against worsening conditions as we drive transformational change in our company.”

Ford also encouraged Congress to pass the cash-for-clunkers program. So Ford was advocating for and benefiting from government assistance programs.
