Fished LBL as usual Sunday. Put in at Stephen F. Austin HS ramp. Have to get to the ramp early to get a parking space, due to joggers not fisherman. (I can't understand why someone who is going to jog around the lake needs to park at the boat ramp to get twenty feet closer to the jogging trail, rather than parking on the street, but what do I know, since I retired from the Army I only run if someone is chasing me.) Air temp was 78 when I put in, 94 when I got out. Water temp was 82.5. Wind was about 6 mph at dawn, was 13 mph by the time I called it quits at 11 am. Fished from 6:20 to about 11 am. Caught about 20 Bluegill/Sunfish, and three small (under a pound) bass, all on my usual black/silver 9/32 crank bait. Talked to a guy fishing for bass who was taking his kayak out the same time that I was, he had no luck fishing a TX rigged worm and a bluegill swimbait.
Was going to fish Barton Creek hoping to catch a Rio or two before the Zilker boat rental opened and 10,000 people in rented kayaks and paddleboards came down stream under various states of control. Before I even got to the first bridge I came to a dead stop. There is an algae mat so thick I couldn't paddle through it that spanned the creek. When the sun came up I realized it extended down both banks almost to the lake itself. Other than the center of the creek chanel I'd call the creek unfishable right now unless you're going to punch through the algae with a soft plastic and fish the bottom. So I ended up fishing the south bank until I reached Red Bud. There is a lot of algae matting on the west side of Red Bud as well, making that area almost unfishable. I fished back down the north bank and called it a day when I got back to the ramp.
Hopefully we'll get some rain soon to wash the algae out of Barton Creek and open up the west side of Red Bud. There's enough flow from the dam to keep the main lake pretty clear, though caution is needed on the ramp, it's slicker than owl [censored], watched a young lady putting her paddle board in fall on her fourth point of contact.
Looking forward to some cooler weather and bass chasing shad so I can target some bass for awhile (not that I'm not having a fun summer chasing big bluegill).
Here's the one fish that was worth taking a picture of. I started to measure him but he made a break for it before I could get him situated on the measuring board.
And my iPhone didn't do this justice, from Barton Creek there's a great view of the Texas Capital. I may bring my Digital SLR out some morning to get a good picture of this:
