I have been drop shotting for a few months now & thought I would share a few things I learned over the summer.

Weights: Have tried multiple brands & sizes. Quality really varies from brand to brand. Sometimes you get weights that look like the mold must be at the end of it's life & when you try and pinch the line it breaks off or cuts it every time. Anyway, I have found the 1/8 oz weight to be the best with 4-6 lb test line. I have gone exclusively to tungsten because I believe smaller is always better plus the quality of the weight seems to be more consistent. They are more pricey, but I believe worth it. The 2 best weights I have found are : Reaction Tackle 1/8 oz Tungsten (black) - $14.99 for 8 at Amazon. A better bargain is the XPS Tungsten Finesse 1/8 oz (grey) at $4.79 for 4 weights at Bass Pro. The only problem with Bass Pro on line is that you have to spend $50 to get free shipping...if you pay shipping costs you lose your "good deal". I generally can order hooks, sinkers, and Gulp Alive and reach $50 pretty quick.

Hooks: Have gone exclusively to the VMC Spinshot #6 set up. They are a pain to tie, but the more practice I get the easier it is. Always pre tie 4 or 5 at home and have them ready when on the water...it makes life way easier. You can get the spinshots at Bass Pro for $4.79. On Amazon they are $7.48...you can see that the "free" shipping at Amazon really isn't "free". When fishing this set up I try and put the weight 4-7 inches below the spinshot hook. Also, always make sure you tie the weight line to the bottom side of the spinshot, so that the hook is pointing upward.

Gulp Alive 1" minnows can be found at Amazon, Wal Mart, Bass Pro, Dicks and directly on line at Berkley. They usually run just under $6 per jar, but have found them at Dicks for $3.99 on sale. Of course you can always use the Bait of Champions (worms) drop shotting and they work great too.

In the pic you see the weights...they are all 1/8 oz. The biggest one is lead and you can see the voids in the body. These voids catch weeds & debris that you constantly have to clean [Linked Image]

Hope this helps anyone looking for drop shot info, and if you have some tips/tactics on the subject would love to hear them...

You can do the same thing without paying a dollar a Hook.

Thanks Vogey. I've determined over the last two weeks that I suck at drop shotting. Will try this out next weekend.

I really need to practice putting the darn thing where I want. I vastly underestimated how far a 1/8 oz weight will go with a light action rod and 6 lb test mono. If you see a bunch of chartreuse Gulp Minnows hanging from low hanging tree limbs on LBL, that was me. I also need to remember this isn't a Texas or Carolina rig. If I put it on the wrong side of a laydown, odds of being able to reel it back without hanging up are slim to none.

Techno...Thanks for the info video. I really tried that knot for a while but wanted something to help prevent line twists plus something I could pre-tie at home (several) making for one easy knot on the water. That's why I changed to the spinshot…

John...I feel your pain...Probably lost 4 or 5 set-ups today in the timber on Fayette, but had 5 pre-tied in the boat, so it was a pretty painless fix...

Osborne, Jagg, Laker & Banker...thanks for the replies.

I pre-tie them using 8# mono with a loop knot on top ,the loop attaches to a snap swivel that's on my main line which is braid,so I have no twist issues.

Yep...you got a swivel on top the leader/dropshot rig, and a swivel on the bottom lead weight too.And the loop makes it so easy to put them on, I make up about ten ahead of time to go fishing with.

Great post! I would add that the beauty of this rig is that if you are fishing on 2 ft grass you can adjust the higth of your bait to be just above it. Is really versatile . if I'm casting I like the leader a little bit longer foR the bait to stay higher up on the water column but if I'm just flipping I like the leader short
