There are no bad snakes in Texas or anywhere else for that matter. There are however Venomous snakes that can be deadly but they are not bad by any means. There are however people who think the only good snake is a dead snake which is just shameful.

well, now I know what kind of snake it was that joined me on the boat a couple of yrs back on fork, coral snake. looked just like the black one with yellow bands. swam up and got in the jackplate, took a little ride later so not sure where it bailed. had never seen a snake with those markings before, thought it might be some sort of king snake. A few years ago I'm out in Ray Branch on Fork, tied off to a tree, cat fishing. Nobody around, except what looked like a coral snake swimming right towards my boat. I saw the red, yellow, black, but forgot the sequence for safe or poisonous. Luckily, as it got close enough, I just too the tip of my rod and steered it away. Don't know what I would have done if it had gotten in the boat.

East Texas and southwest okie cottonmouths must be a completely different species then. I've never met an aggressive one in my life. Yellow belly water snakes and broad banded water snakes just want you to think they're the biggest badaces in the pond. none of the cottonmouth I have eliminated were aggressive, stepped on 3 of them and not a one tried to strike (in fairness, I did step on ones head. hard to strike when a size 11 is driving you into the mud).

[censored]!!! Now I gotta whack all of them... Almost stepped on a 18 inch Coral snake a few weeks ago. I never go out without shoes on, but wanted to try out new baitcaster before work, so got in a hurry. Walked around the driveway and the bugger was resting in the early sun.

I use a simple method.
If the snake is on land, it is a rattlesnake.
If the snake is in the water, it is a water moccasin.
I'm not getting close enough to make a better identification than that.

wow, i was misinformed. I thought that you had to cut the head off and count the rings in the neck to be sure. Odd number was poisonous and even were ok.

Coral snakes are pretty docile and you dang near have to be playing with them to get bit.

my neighbor killed this cottonmouth beside a pond on his farm near Albany,ga...Jack Thompson and his wife were riding around the pond and his wife spotted a tail sticking out of the grass beside the little road they were driving down....Jack stopped the truck and thinking it was a small alligator,he picked up a shovel from back of his truck....he parted the grass with his shovel and when he did this snake coiled and reared up....jack told me he swung the shovel as a reflex action and fortunately caught this huge snake just right and almost cut it's head off.....he ended up throwing the snake in the pond for the turtles to eat.....he showed me the pictures on his camera late that afternoon and I thought it was biggest cottonmouth by far I'd ever seen (Jack was 6ft 4 inches tall)….several people the next week told him to show the picture to the local DNR office.....He did and they told him that was probably the largest cottonmouth ever killed in Georgia.....I can assure you that picture was not photo-shopped because I saw this and several other pictures while they still on his camera... incidentally, cottonmouths differ in marking and colors depending on where they come from.....I've seen them in various shades of brown and black and a few with markings like the snake Jack killed...

Huckleberry brings up a good point.
There are regional variations. As he mentioned, having grown up in the Deep South...adult Cottonmouths to me were jet black..or close to it. Also, copperhead were darker than what is common in Texas. Same here. Texas copper heads look like Arkansas copper heads. Cottonmouths in Arkansas are mostly black, razor backed and stink to high heaven.......and are by gawd aggressive ! yep agree this ^^^^^^^ the cottonmouth can be very aggressive. I have had them charge from 5 to ten feet away in south Ark and Stink.

Would hate to have run into that one. Lucky he did not get bit. I hate snakes especially the venomous ones.

For all of you that claim cotton mouths are agressive. You need to look up Orry Marten chased by a nest of cotton mouths. It's a good video
