Ballpark on a 3000 sq ft shop foundation - per sq ft cost?
Would you do a 5" or 6" slab?

Would you do a 5" or 6" slab? Too many variables, dirt work, beams, footings, permits, access, where ? 5 inch is plenty unless you are pulling heavy equipment in there.

you can do 4" if you put wire and rebar in it, rebar in beams and wire mat in main area. if you plan on a lift or other heavy equipment to be permanently installed then just thicken the slab in that area, generaly 2' either direction out from the planned install location. thicken to 6" and add a couple pcs of 1/2" rebar tied to the wire. this is how we did house slabs way back when, this one is 1990 in ft stockton for a wardens house at the state prison. maybe a tad over engineered? this is what a properly engineered slab should look like but wire instead of rebar mat, should have 4 bars in the beams to be done right.

Now would be a good time to hire a pier installer and have them run the drill truck down to bedrock as many as feasible. Then pour the slab on top. Something that I think should be mandatory in the building code. If it cost $20K on top of the cost of the house, better to pay it up front than worry about watering the foundation and paying jimmy jack leg foundation repair companies a few years down the road.
"During His Sermon on the Mount, Jesus told a story about two men: one who built his house upon a rock and another who built his house upon sand. The house built upon a rock weathered the storm, and the builder is called wise; but the house built on the sand collapsed during the storm, and the builder is called foolish."

Playing baseball on a concrete shop foundation is not going to be fun.

Shop that size, I'd use 6" slab . You probably will be parking boat hooked to truck inside as well as having all the shop equipment you think you will need. BIG air compressor, drill press, lathe etc.etc. Also guessing you will build a safe room inside for weather gun storage etc. Use as much reinforced concrete as you can squeeze into the budget. You won't regret it.

It is not much more cost to have an engineer do this right with soil testing, test drilling and then handing you an engineered plan, it could save you some money down the road. I started doing that on anything we build outside of sheds and stuff like that. On our house we spent around $2000.00 on engineering, sampling and test holes, same with the shop.

You get out of it what you put into it!
