What is your go to lure for big trout? I always break out the Topwater when I am targeting big trout or reds.

Top water has caught a lot but I’ve caught more really big ones on a Norton sand eel.

Corky Fat Boy or Super Spook mostly.. but it's not about the lure really. You have to learn where big trout live and when they are home. Once you know that then you can and will catch them on other lures. GrassWalker has been catching some pigs as well where Corkies and Topwaters won't get them. There are times when Big Trout dont want a topwater, and times when you can't fish a FatBoy. So you're going to need other tools in those situations when the trout are in shallow grass or rocks.

Yeah, better explain a little more detailed.
We catch quite a few really big trout when we're sight fishing reds. There it is, swimming around in a foot of water, the sand eel gets the reaction bite with a minimum splash, the truth is, they'd hit a rubber dog turd if it's presented correctly.

Topwater gets them when you're fishing an area.

Yep, spot on. It's about finding the fish and casting in front of it or casting into the school or at a minimum casting into high percentage areas.. areas of structure with signs of life on it. That's how you get fish to hit plastic turds... kuddie bars... floating snicker bars. LOL ya'll remember National Lampoons Vacation when the Baby Ruth bar got thrown into the pool. Yeah, Trout and reds would hit that if it had hooks if casted in front of it.

When I fly fished for trout at night my go-to was a 6-8" fly made of black mare's tale (from my own horse). I just stuffed as much as would fit through the eye of a hook, double it over acrosss the bend, and threw on a quick nasty wrap up by the eye with Duo-Braid. It casts like hell, but it was big, black, and moved water. I think they hit it out of anger. I've caught my biggest on that. Not the most, though. It doesn't draw a lot of hits, but when it does draw a hit....whoa.

This fly sounds interesting. Fishing canal lights? My daughter sometimes works around a horse barn, I may see if she can get some black mare’s tail.

I'm willing to bet any color hair will work. I think it's just the size and the "head" pushing water that draws the strikes. I did have to fish it on an 8/9 weight due to the size.

ETA: Yes, under lights. And I wouldn't even go so far as to call this abomination a fly!

I have best luck in SouthEast Texas with DOA shrimp behind popping cork. Been trying A.M. Lures lately with good results. Can not say I have had any luck at with large Trout the last 3 months they have been in 12 to 18 inch range. Dad and I took home 4 slot reds on mix of DOA and cut mullet or finger mullet (he likes to fish with bait as does not want to constantly cast) this past weekend. I caught about 8 under size trout on DOA. We were fishing Keith Lake.
