Got out a few hours yesterday for some pleasure drifting with the family. Went to get bait and first throw hit the biggest damn Bluecat nursery Ive ever hit. Ive hit plenty in the past but I thought I had gotten better at identifying these nurseries on sonar. I really thought I was dropping on gizzards suspended over the thermocline. Oh I caught 20 gizzards alright, problem was what I thought was a thermocline was actually a blue cat nursery that was 5 ft thick and 100 yards long. I pulled up about as many baby blue cats as a 7ft cast net can hold. I collected the gizzards and released as many blues as I could but ultimately had to sacrifice the net to the lake gods. hammer Wish I would have taken some pics of it but I was on tilt big time at that point.

Started our first drift at 9am. We drifted the main lake humps which were covered up with fish. Fish were biting good and we ended up with 25 in 2 short drifts. Caught ours in 20-30 ft on gizzard chunks. We were off the water by 11 and left em biting.

I did this once at the Oak Point boat ramp. Hundreds of sharp finned baby blues. I had to remove them all as the GW patiently sat in his truck and watched me!

We had a great time..there will be plenty of time to chase big fish in the future. Im having a blast watching my 3 yr old catching fish. Hes gonna be rollin with me the rest of the summer so any of my posts will be of family trips. Just thought Id share with others who might like family fishing posts or a lake report.

Boat ramps early are good. Later you can graph em and throw on em. Bridge pilings are good too.

This time of year its not too hard. Come January its tougher.

Getting the right bait is the first piece to the bluecat puzzle. There are shad in every part of the lake at every depth but finding good gizzards can be difficult. Locating them depends on what time of day your throwing your net. If you go before the sun is up you can get some under the lights at the marina. Early morning you can get em at the boat ramp. Mid to late day you can find some under the bridges. I usually get mine in none of those areas Lol....9 times out of 10 I get mine off mid depth structure like ledges, depressions, or channels. To catch em the way I do you need a decent graph with side image to locate them and get over the top of em. Second you need a deep hole net with tape to get down to where I get my bait. 1-2 throws and you’ll have plenty. texas

I never get that many in a throw net. Im lucky if I get a few each toss. I will see them jumping out of the water right next to the boat and toss net they are long gone by the time it hits the water.
