Spent the late morning on Brushy Creek in Round Rock. There are indeed Rio's there, actually quite a few. Caught a lot of 'em as a matter of fact my first cast yielded one. Could not believe the shallow water that held fish today. Fish of all sizes. Caught Rios, bass, and some pretty good sized redbreasts and of course about four million longears. [Linked Image]

[Linked Image] Caught some bigger Rios than those pictured, perhaps to 7 or 8 inches. Had bass over 3 or 4 pounds on but not landed. Bigger fish have been hard for me on my little Hardy glass 3wt. Probably have to drag my old 5wt 'boo out or just grab the Sage launch 6wt. Those rios sure do fight pretty good though and now I want a biggun'. I'll keep at it. May have to explore some stuff farther south and west just unsure of public access. Thank you to all who helped me out Banker, Giter done, catyaker, and laker one. Ya'll helped make this old soldiers day.

Fun day running a popper, dropper rig. Actually doubled up on redbreasts one time. Used a #12 chami worm and a #14 rubber legged fox squirrel nymph for the Rios. Rios guarding fry on nests were more interested in chasing the giant shoals of fingerling bass away than in any angling offerings. Chami worm outperformed all other nymphs. At one time tried a #14 prince nymph and a #12 hare's ear but they produced no fish except the occasional long ear. Given the rubber legs on the fox squirrel I am guessing they were attacking because it looked similar to a predatory damsel nymph . The worm got sucked in good most times and was glad I had my little hemostats I used to use for freeing hooks from small brook trout. Only had one Rio top water but he crashed it. It was amazing how easy it was to sight fish to them though they kinda look like a sheepshead in the water; very stark contrast in colors.

May try again next week sometime, and do some more exploring after the Labor crazies go back to work. Will have to tie up some more worms. Need to check for some uber tiny bead chain so I can get the fly to ride point up. If anyone wants to go let me know, always looking for partner.

Great post and pics Bones72. You're very fortunate to have Brushy Creek to fish without having to drive through Austin. crazy

My brother and I went to Brushy once in the Summer and it was pretty cool. Caught some Rios, largemouths and one big redbreast. Glad to see you get on ‘em, sir!

Thanks' guys Brushy is definitely cool and believe me I am grateful to be able to avoid Austin. Traffic like that is why I quit fishing many bodies of water north and due west of Denver when I lived in Colorado. Fortunately here there seem to be ways to bypass Austin. Colorado had a limited road network compared to here.
